What’s next for Nick and Charlie in ‘Heartstopper’ Season 4?

Creator Alice Oseman is hopeful for a final season, but Netflix hasn’t made it official yet.

Here's what you need to know about a possible "Heartstopper" Season 4 on Netflix.

There’s something really special about “Heartstopper.” What started as a gentle, heartfelt teen romance has grown into a full-blown phenomenon — thanks to its honest storytelling, lovable characters, and that warm, cozy vibe that somehow makes you cry and feel better all at once. But with Season 3 now in the rearview and Netflix still holding off on a Season 4 renewal, fans are getting a little antsy. If you’re wondering what’s next for Charlie and Nick (and whether this sweet, queer love story will get the ending it deserves) here’s everything you need to know about “Heartstopper” and what might come next.

Everything you need to know about ‘Heartstopper’ Season 4:

When will ‘Heartstopper’ Season 4 premiere on Netflix?

As of now, “Heartstopper” has not been officially renewed for Season 4, so there’s no premiere date just yet. Creator Alice Oseman has said she’s optimistic that Netflix will greenlight a final season, and work is happening behind the scenes to try and make it happen. If Season 4 does move forward, it would likely take some time — Oseman is still working on the sixth and final graphic novel, which she wants to release before any new episodes air. So, for now, fans will have to hang tight and keep their fingers crossed. In the meantime, you can stream all three seasons of “Heartstopper” on Netflix.

What is ‘Heartstopper’ Season 4 about?

First, the big thing to know: Season 4 of “Heartstopper” hasn’t been officially renewed by Netflix — at least not yet. But creator Alice Oseman has made it clear that there’s a plan in place if it does happen. The next season would serve as the final chapter, wrapping up Nick and Charlie’s story using Volume 6 of the graphic novel series and the standalone novella “Nick and Charlie” as source material. Oseman’s even said she’s begging to get the greenlight, and that everyone behind the scenes is still working hard to make it happen.

So, what would Season 4 actually cover? Expect it to dig into some of the emotional fallout teased at the end of Season 3, especially around Nick’s plans for university. He’s a year older than Charlie, and the idea of a long-distance relationship is very much on the table. If the season follows the novella, we’ll see Nick preparing to leave for school while Charlie wrestles with what that means for their future. There’s still a lot of love between them, but there’s also fear, change, and the question of how to stay close when life starts pulling you in different directions.

Beyond Nick and Charlie, Oseman has said Volume 6 will feel like an “epilogue” of sorts for the full series, focusing on the everyday rhythms of growing up — messy, funny, emotional, and real. There’s also plenty of room to explore the supporting characters: Elle and Tao’s evolving relationship, Isaac’s journey with his identity, and Tori’s continued exploration of her asexuality. If the show does return, it sounds like the goal isn’t just to tie up loose ends, it’s to give every character a proper send-off while staying true to the gentle, heartfelt tone that made “Heartstopper” so beloved in the first place.

Who might be cast in ‘Heartstopper’ Season 4?

If Season 4 of “Heartstopper” moves forward, you can expect the core cast to return — starting with Joe Locke as Charlie Spring and Kit Connor as Nick Nelson. Both have been at the heart of the show since the beginning, and their story isn’t quite finished yet. Yasmin Finney (Elle), William Gao (Tao), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), and Jenny Walser (Tori) would likely be back too, since their character arcs still have room to grow.

Plus, with Volume 6 of the graphic novels still in progress, there’s a good chance we’ll see more of Darragh Hand as Michael, and maybe even another appearance from Jonathan Bailey, who made a brief but memorable cameo as Charlie’s celeb crush, Jack Maddox.

Since Season 4 would adapt both Volume 6 and the “Nick and Charlie” novella, we might also meet some new characters — like university classmates or friends from outside the Truham-Higgs bubble. No casting has been announced yet, but with the show’s track record of introducing compelling, well-cast characters each season, fans are definitely hoping for a few surprises.

One thing’s for sure: “Heartstopper” has always been about more than just its leads. The ensemble cast brings so much warmth and nuance to the world Alice Oseman created, and if Netflix gives the green light, we’re likely to see them all come together one last time for a proper sendoff.

Teens Charlie and Nick discover their unlikely friendship might be something more as they navigate school and young love.

What happened at the end of ‘Heartstopper’ season 3?

Spoiler Alert. There are spoilers below for Season 3 of ‘Heartstopper.’

Season 3 of “Heartstopper” ends with Nick and Charlie taking a major step in their relationship—both emotionally and physically. After spending the season navigating Charlie’s mental health journey, including a diagnosis of anorexia and OCD, the finale finds him in a stronger, more grounded place. He’s back from treatment, working with a therapist, and beginning to feel more confident in his body — symbolized by his decision to perform at the summer fête without his usual oversized hoodie. When Nick finally makes it back in time to see the show, the two head home, share an intimate moment, and quietly spend the night together. The final shot is a tender one: Nick and Charlie in bed, holding each other, animated leaves swirling around them like a soft exhale.

But not everything is fully resolved. While Nick and Charlie are closer than ever, the future looms large — especially with Nick starting to think seriously about university. His trip with friends to visit campuses is a subtle reminder that change is coming, and long-distance may be on the horizon. There’s also a sweet but slightly open-ended beat for Tori, Charlie’s sister, who hesitates to define her relationship with Michael. In the graphic novels, Tori later reveals she’s asexual, adding a layer of complexity that could be explored more in the show if it returns. The season may end on a hopeful note, but it doesn’t shy away from the reality that growing up means facing what’s next — even if it’s scary.

How can you watch previous seasons of ‘Heartstopper’?

You can stream all three seasons of “Heartstopper” right now on Netflix. While Season 4 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, now’s a great time to catch up on the story so far and soak in all the joy, heartache, and animated leaves this series does so well.
