“Black Doves” is a six-episode British spy thriller TV show created by Joe Barton that follows Helen Webb, a devoted wife by day and an undercover spy for a shadowy organization known as the Black Doves by night. Keira Knightley plays Helen, who for years has been feeding her politician husband’s classified info to her employer. But her carefully constructed life implodes when her secret lover, Jason, is murdered by a criminal organization in London. To help Helen survive, her employer brings in an old friend to keep her safe - a professional assassin, Sam, played by Ben Whishaw. As Helen and Sam navigate London’s criminal underbelly, they uncover a conspiracy that links the city’s dark elements with an upcoming geopolitical crisis.

As the show is dropping in December, it’s fitting that it’s set in London during Christmas. Similar to shows like “Slow Horses” or classic John le Carré adaptations like “The Night Manager,” the show weaves a tale of espionage, betrayal, and survival while examining the moral complexities inherent in leading a double life. Netflix must think it hits the mark because it has already renewed the series for a second season ahead of its Season 1 premiere.

Who are the main characters of ‘Black Doves’?

• Helen Webb: Played by Keira Knightley, Helen is a dedicated wife and mother leading a double life as a professional spy. Her world is thrown into turmoil when her secret lover is murdered, prompting her to seek the truth while trying to protect her family.

• Sam: Ben Whishaw plays Sam – a cold, troubled, deadly trigger man. An assassin. And an old friend of Helen. He returns to London to protect Helen as she investigates her lover’s death, all while confronting his own dark past.

• Mrs. Reed: Played Sarah Lancashire, Mrs. Reed is Helen’s enigmatic handler, overseeing her operations within the Black Doves organization. She intervenes when Helen’s life is endangered, calculating several moves ahead of everyone else.

• Jason Davies: Played by Andrew Koji, Jason is a civil servant and Helen’s secret lover. His assassination by a sniper sets off the chain of events that serve as the thrust of the show.

• Wallace Webb: Andrew Buchan plays Wallace - Helen’s husband and the UK’s Secretary of Defense. He doesn’t know his wife is a spy or that she’s been passing info about his government affairs to the Black Doves.

• Michael: Played by Omari Douglas, Michael is Sam’s estranged soulmate.

• Lenny Lines: Kathryn Hunter plays Lenny – a manager of killers. She gave Sam his first job and thinks of him as a son.

• Williams: Played by Ella Lily Hyland, Williams is a Gen Z freelance assassin with an innocent heart that beats in conflict with the violent world she lives in.

• Eleanor: Played Gabrielle Creevy, Eleanor is another young assassin who becomes Williams’ new partner. She’s known for her sharp wit and dark sense of humor which is really a coping mechanism for her desperate need for companionship.

Who is the creator behind ‘Black Doves’?

The creator of “Black Doves” is Joe Barton. He’s a prolific writer best known for creating the BAFTA-winning series, “Giri/Haji,” - a soulful thriller set in Tokyo and London that explores the butterfly effect of a single murder across two cities. Barton also created “The Lazarus Project,” a time-loop sci-fi thriller that follows the character of George who wakes up to find himself several months in the past before being recruited for the Lazarus Project – a secret organization that turns back time when the world is at threat of extinction.

What time will episodes of ‘Black Doves’ come on Netflix?

“Black Doves” will debut all six episodes on Thursday, Dec. 5. While there’s no confirmation on what time the show will drop, usually Netflix releases its new TV shows and movies around the world at 3 a.m. ET – which is 12 midnight on the west coast.
