Don’t miss ‘Lanterns” grounded, gritty superhero story

Don’t miss ‘Lanterns” grounded, gritty superhero story

Hal Jordan and John Stewart trade outer space for rural Nebraska in this gritty new take.

With a background in sports and entertainment reporting, he’s covered everything from Broadway to college football. He cut the cord in 2014 and has a sharp eye for streaming trends and a soft spot for Hallmark movies.

I’ve never been a huge fan of superhero shows or movies. The costumes, the over-the-top battles, the save-the-world-again finales — it’s just never really been my thing. But that’s exactly why “Lanterns” has my attention. It’s not some big cosmic spectacle. It’s a grounded murder mystery set in small-town America, with two Green Lanterns trying to uncover something dark that’s been buried in the heartland. Think less flying through space, more “True Detective” with power rings. With a sharp creative team and ties to last year’s “Superman” movie, this feels like a totally different take on the genre. Here’s everything you need to know about “Lanterns.”

What is the ‘Lanterns’ TV series about?

At its core, “Lanterns” is a murder mystery — just one that happens to involve space cops with glowing rings. The story follows two of DC’s most iconic Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they team up to investigate a strange and disturbing crime in rural Nebraska. But this isn’t about battling aliens or saving the universe — it’s more grounded than that. Think quiet towns, long drives, buried secrets, and a case that keeps pulling them deeper into something way bigger than it first seems. It’s got all the ingredients of a slow-burn thriller, just set in a world where intergalactic law enforcement exists.

The show is being pitched as DC’s answer to “True Detective” — and it’s leaning hard into that vibe. That means a darker tone, a slower pace, and a focus on character over spectacle. Both Hal and John are dealing with their own baggage, and as the mystery unfolds, it’s just as much about what’s going on inside them as it is about what’s happening in the heartland. Even though they’ve got power rings and can fly, this isn’t a story about superpowers. It’s about what those powers do to people, and what kind of person you have to be to carry that responsibility in the first place.

What makes “Lanterns” especially interesting is how it fits into the larger DC universe without being totally tied to it. Yeah, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner shows up (he’s also in the new “Superman” movie), but showrunner Chris Mundy says Season 1 is designed to stand on its own. So you don’t need to watch a dozen other shows or films to understand what’s going on. It’s a self-contained story with the potential to expand if it hits. And with HBO and DC Studios behind it — and a team that includes folks from “Ozark,” “Lost,” and “Watchmen” — this isn’t just another superhero spinoff. It’s a full-on prestige drama that happens to wear a cape.

Who stars in the ‘Lanterns’ TV series?

The leads are locked in: Kyle Chandler is playing Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre is stepping into the role of John Stewart. Both are big gets — Chandler’s known for “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline,” while Pierre had a breakout year with “Rebel Ridge” on Netflix and voices Mufasa in Disney’s recently released “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Their dynamic will be at the heart of the show, but they’re not the only familiar faces showing up. Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner, the brash Green Lantern, whom he has also played in James Gunn’s “Superman” film. So while this show is designed to stand on its own, it’s very much part of the new DC universe.

The rest of the cast is a strong mix of character actors and up-and-comers. Kelly Macdonald is playing Kerry, a small-town sheriff and Hal’s love interest. Garret Dillahunt plays William Macon, a conspiracy-minded antagonist, with Jason Ritter as his son, Billy. Poorna Jagannathan is rumored to play Zoe, a possible romantic connection for John. Ulrich Thomsen joins as Sinestro — a former Green Lantern turned villain — alongside Nicole Ari Parker and Chris Coy in undisclosed roles. With this kind of lineup, “Lanterns” is clearly aiming for more than just superhero action. It’s going for layered drama with real emotional stakes.

How does ‘Lanterns’ connect to the new DC Universe?

While “Lanterns” is built as a standalone series, it’s still part of the larger DC Universe that James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting. Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner appears in both this show and the upcoming “Superman” film, which hints that Lanterns could be setting up bigger stories down the line. For now, though, Season 1 is designed to work on its own — so you don’t need to do any homework before diving in.

Who are the creators behind ‘Lanterns’?

The creative team behind “Lanterns” is stacked with talent from some of the most critically acclaimed shows of the last decade. Chris Mundy, who served as showrunner on “Ozark,” is leading the charge here as both showrunner and executive producer. He’s joined by Damon Lindelof, the mind behind genre-bending hits like “Lost” and “Watchmen,” and comic book writer Tom King, who’s best known for his work on DC’s “Mister Miracle” and “The Vision.”

The trio co-wrote the pilot together, and their goal is clear: to create a grounded, emotionally rich detective story set within the world of the Green Lantern Corps. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes (“Slow Horses”), who’s also on board as an executive producer, with additional episodes helmed by Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov — all of whom bring serious directing cred to the table.
