Here’s What You Need to Know About New Hospital Comedy ‘St. Denis Medical’

‘St. Denis Medical’ dives into the daily chaos of a struggling hospital in NBC’s newest comedy

St. Denis Medical debuts on Tuesday, Nov. 12 on NBC.

When mockumentary comedy TV shows work, they really work… like: “The Office,” “Parks And Recreation,” “Abbott Elementary,” and “What We Do In The Shadows.” And so, who can blame NBC for going back to the well with “St. Denis Medical” – the new mockumentary comedy series set at an understaffed Oregon hospital. Here’s everything you need to know about the show, debuting on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and streaming the next day on Peacock.

Everything You Need to Know About ‘St. Denis Medical’:

What is ‘St. Denis Medical’ About?

“St. Denis Medical” is an upcoming comedy series that delves into the daily operations of an underfunded and understaffed hospital in Oregon. The story follows a dedicated – if eccentric - team of medical professionals trying to provide quality care while battling through limited resources and plenty of personal drama. The ensemble cast features Wendi McLendon-Covey as Joyce, the hospital’s ambitious executive director, David Alan Grier as Ron, a seasoned emergency department doctor, and Allison Tolman as Alex, the supervising nurse.

Co-created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin – both of whom have more than enough experience writing comedy - “St. Denis Medical” employs a mockumentary-style set-up, similar to shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” Characters interact directly with the camera, providing insights and reactions to help squeeze out more laughs. The series blends situational humor with character-driven comedy, highlighting the challenges of working in an underfunded hospital.

Who Are the Main Characters of ‘St. Denis Medical’?

  • Joyce: Played by Wendi McLendon-Covey, Joyce is the executive director of St. Denis Medical. A former oncological surgeon, she harbors ambitious, though often unrealized, dreams for the hospital.

  • Alex: Allison Tolman takes on the role of Alex, the supervising nurse in the Emergency Department. Dedicated and compassionate, she tries to maintain order and provide quality care despite the hospital’s challenges.

  • Bruce: Portrayed by Josh Lawson, Bruce is a trauma surgeon known for his skills in the operating room. His confidence and expertise make him a key figure in handling critical cases.

  • Matt: Played by Mekki Leeper, Matt is a newly hired registered nurse in the Emergency Department. He’s not the sharpest scalpel in the surgery room, but he does his best to fit in.

  • Serena: Kahyun Kim plays Serena, a nurse in the Emergency Department. Known for her sharp wit, Serena navigates the challenges of the hospital with a mix of sarcasm and humor, helping to keep things light.

  • Val: Played by Kaliko Kauahi, Val is a sassy and resourceful nurse administration – the first line of defense at St. Denis Medical.

  • Steve: Stephen Schneider takes on the recurring role of Steve, the hospital’s chaplain. He’s well-meaning and eager to share his spiritual guidance… for better or for worse.

Who Are the Creators Behind ‘St. Denis Medical’?

“St. Denis Medical” is co-created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, both of whom have impressive backgrounds in television comedy. Spitzer was a writer on “The Office” before creating “Superstore” and “American Auto” with Ledgin beside him. Ledgin also worked on comedies like “Rutherford Falls,” “Mrs. Fletcher,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” With these two guys at the helm, “St. Denis Medical” is in experienced (and funny) hands.
