‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 is filming — here’s what to expect
Keegan-Michael Key, Renée Zellweger, and more join the cast as filming kicks off in NYC.
I thought Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” was its best so far. It was funny (obvs), but also really well paced, with multiple storylines (both inside the building and out) that kept things interesting, and a mystery that kept me hooked right up until the finale. It somehow managed to feel fresh without losing any of the charm that made the show such a hit to begin with. And just like that, our favorite amateur sleuths are back on the case — Season 5 is now filming in New York.
Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are all returning, along with a new round of big-name guest stars. If this cast is any indication, we’re in for another fun and twisty ride. Here’s everything you need to know about Season 5 of “Only Murders in the Building.”

Who’s been cast in ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5?

The main trio isn’t going anywhere — Steve Martin (Charles), Martin Short (Oliver), and Selena Gomez (Mabel) are all back for Season 5, along with Michael Cyril Creighton, who plays Howard. After the Season 4 finale left us with a brand-new mystery to solve, the crew is hitting the ground running in New York, with production already underway. If you’ve been watching from the beginning, you know part of the fun is seeing who joins the cast each season, and this time, the lineup is as star-studded as ever.
Among the new faces: Keegan-Michael Key, Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Téa Leoni, Jermaine Fowler, and Logan Lerman have all been confirmed for recurring roles. As usual, we don’t know exactly who they’re playing yet (the show loves to keep that stuff under wraps), but with a cast like this, it’s safe to expect a mix of big personalities, offbeat suspects, and maybe even a red herring or two. Given how Season 4 leaned into Hollywood, it’ll be interesting to see where the story goes next — and how all these new characters fit into Lester’s mysterious death.
What happened at the end of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4?
Spoiler Alert. There are spoilers below for Season 4 of ‘Only Murders in the Building.’
Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building wraps up with a classic twist — the killer is caught, but another murder crashes the party. After chasing red herrings through Hollywood egos and West Tower conspiracies, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel finally crack the case: Sazz (Jane Lynch) was murdered by Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha), a stuntman-turned-screenwriter who stole her script and tried to cover it up with a couple of well-placed bullets.
But the finale throws one last curveball when Marshall himself is taken out… by none other than Jan (Amy Ryan), who’s been secretly hiding in the Arconia all season. She claims it was all for love (of Sazz, not Charles), and yes, she’s arrested — but let’s be real, she’s not the type to stay locked up for long.
The trio barely has time to process any of it before tragedy strikes again. Just after Oliver and Loretta’s sweet and chaotic wedding, the group finds Lester — the Arconia’s longtime doorman — dead in the courtyard fountain. He hasn’t had much screen time lately, but his sudden death hits hard, especially after he shared a heartfelt story earlier in the episode about getting married in that very courtyard. It’s a quiet, eerie note to end on, and a perfect setup for Season 5’s next big mystery.
What is ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 about?
The short answer is we don’t know. But we can only assume Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building picks up right after the jaw-dropper of a finale in Season 4 — when Lester, the Arconia’s longtime doorman and low-key fan favorite, is found dead in the courtyard fountain. It’s a total curveball that throws Charles, Oliver, and Mabel right back into investigation mode, and this time the case hits way closer to home.
Season 5 probably kicks off with the trio trying to figure out who would want to kill someone as seemingly harmless (and beloved) as Lester. And since it’s “Only Murders,” you can bet the truth is going to be a lot weirder — and a lot funnier — than it first appears.
