Fandango at Home announces expansion with new features

Fandango at Home announces expansion with new features

On Wednesday, Fandango at Home announced it was adding the ability to reach into the homes of millions of cable customers.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.
Fandango at Home is adding PPV and TVOD for cable abilities.

[Fandango at Home] wants to bring customers even more high-quality entertainment that they can enjoy from the comfort of their living room. The service, which primarily serves as a premium video-on-demand (PVOD) service that allows customers to stream movies that are still only available in theaters, announced on Wednesday that it was adding key capabilities to help more viewers see these movies and that it was also adding live event capabilities.

Key Details:

  • Going live: Fandango at Home is adding the ability to distribute live pay-per-view events.
  • Headed to cable: The service will also support transactional video-on-demand purchases on cable.
  • Reading the room?: The future of the PPV format took a hit when UFC announced it was shifting away from it.

Fandango at Home will expand its capabilities to include the distribution of live pay-per-view events. The platform is expanding first- and third-party content distribution, and soon it will be able to help in offering marquee sports events, top music expositions, and other live content.

In addition, Fandango at Home will be able to reach cable customers where they are with its new, enhanced transactional video-on-demand capabilities. This will let cable subscribers rent new movies that are otherwise only available in cinemas, lending to the premium experience of pay-TV. The expansions help Fandango fill the hole left by the sunset of the longtime industry aggregator iNDEMAND.

“This expansion represents a major leap forward in how Fandango serves fans premium content—when, where, and how they want it,” Fandango SVP Cameron Douglas said. “iNDEMAND was best-in-class in supporting the content distribution of transactional content to the industry. By combining Fandango’s digital innovation and consumer reach with iNDEMAND’s legacy in delivering blockbuster movies, TV, and live events, we’re unlocking new possibilities for how the industry and fans access and enjoy entertainment at home.”

It’s intriguing that Fandango at Home is preparing to enter the pay-per-view space, particularly as it appears the sports broadcasting world is shifting away from that format. For example, in its newly signed deal with Paramount, UFC has decided to abandon the PPV infrastructure, which was a hallmark of its broadcasts on ESPN+. Will the rest of the sports and entertainment world leave PPVs behind? Fandango is clearly betting not.

…

Unlike traditional streaming services, Fandango at Home primarily operates on a transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) model, allowing customers to pay only for the content they want to watch. The service also includes thousands of free, ad-supported movies and TV shows through its “Free with Ads” section, giving viewers access to a rotating selection of popular films and series at no cost.

Viewers can enjoy features such as 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos support on compatible devices; offline viewing of purchased content on mobile devices; parental controls; personalized recommendations; and the ability to create wish lists and watch lists.

With its combination of premium new releases, free streaming options, high-quality video formats, and cross-platform digital ownership, Fandango at Home offers a flexible entertainment experience for movie fans who prefer buying or renting content rather than subscribing to a traditional streaming service.
