AMC+’s content organization is my favorite feature of the service
AMC+ has a ton of varied content, but it lays it out in a really helpful way.
With a starting price of $7 per month, AMC+ is an intriguing mix of money-saving and varied content. Its lower starting price means the streamer comes with fewer of the bells and whistles that other paid streamers have, such as the ability to create multiple profiles or to watch in Ultra-High-Definition 4K.
When thinking of favorite features for AMC+, one came to mind immediately, despite the fact that the streamer doesn’t have as many of these in the traditional sense. You see, AMC+ doesn’t just include AMC content; it also comes with TV shows and movies from IFC Films Unlimited, Shudder, and Sundance Now — and the way it organizes that content makes it really easy to tell what comes from where.
You don’t really get to pick and choose with AMC+ — you get all of the content listed above, whether you really want it or not. That raises the prospect of a confusing and overstuffed user experience when you try to log onto the AMC+ app. Bigger streamers like Disney+ or HBO Max that have a multitude of brands available sort them into their own subsections to make navigation easier, but audiences can be forgiven for apprehending that a cheaper service like AMC+ may not offer this feature.
Fortunately, AMC+ does sort out its content into collections to make it really easy to tell what you’re getting into. If you’re looking for just AMC+ titles, stay on the home page and see shows and movies like “Dark Winds” or the upcoming Anne Rice series “Talamasca: The Secret Order.” Want to switch to Shudder instead? Just scroll down until you see the Collections carousel and open up Shudder Essentials, or continue on to other tile rows on AMC+ that show you titles associated with that service.
It’s a good thing that AMC+ offers this kind of easy sorting, as well. It’s not a kids service by any means, and doesn’t have any content for younger audiences, but it’s still a plus to be able to keep Art the Clown and the “Terrifier” series walled off, instead of in an unlabeled spot where unsuspecting browsers might stumble across it and see something they can never unsee.
The varied brands available on AMC+ demand their own special attention and lend a touch of arthouse feel to a streamer that otherwise spares plenty of expenses. The streamer makes it very clear which titles are associated with which brand, and goes to some length to organize shows and movies into easy-to-access collections in a common-sense way.
None of this feels over-engineered, or like AMC+ is just giving me a taste of something I’ll have to pay extra for later. The AMC+ streaming service is a hub for diverse content, and the way it organizes that content really lowers the barrier to enjoying all the brands the streamer has to offer.
