Fubo to make PPVs available, regardless of subscription status
Additionally, anyone who purchases a pay-per-view event will have access to Fubo Free, which is normally reserved for lapsed subscribers.
It has been a big week for sports-focused streamer Fubo. On Tuesday, the live TV streaming announced a multiyear partnership with fellow sports streamer DAZN, the first phase of which is currently underway. Then on Thursday, Fubo announced that it was expanding its sports pay-per-view options beginning this weekend with a pair of international soccer matches. What makes the new additions especially exciting is that sports fans do not need to be Fubo subscribers to purchase the PPV events.
Key Details:
- Never enough sports: Sports-focused platform Fubo is adding a new slate of pay-per-view events available to all, regardless of subscription status.
- The more the merrier: This announcement comes two days after Fubo announced a multiyear content sharing partnership with sports streamer DAZN.
- Something for nothing: Anyone who purchases a PPV via Fubo will have access to Fubo Free, which is normally reserved for former subscribers only.
As part of this week’s DAZN announcement, Fubo revealed that it will be allowing customers to subscribe to the new DAZN1 channel either as an add-on to their current Fubo subscription or as a standalone option for non-subscribers. Similarly, Fubo will serve as a pay-per-view hub, allowing anyone to purchase the events regardless of their standing with Fubo. This is also how Fubo will handle distributing PPV events from DAZN as well.
However, any non-customer who purchases a PPV event through Fubo will receive access to the Fubo Free FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) platform that is otherwise reserved for former Fubo subscribers. Fubo Free features over 200 linear sports, news, and entertainment channels.
“Pay-Per-View enhances Fubo’s robust live sports offering by giving fans access to premium events when they are available,” Fubo co-founder and CEO David Gandler said. “PPV demonstrates Fubo’s continued commitment to serve consumers with an aggregated content offering at attractive price points, and with the flexibility to subscribe to content of their choosing.”
During the month of June, the streamer will offer CONCACAF World Cup qualifying matches through a partnership with Integrated Sports Media, a company that produces and distributes international PPV and closed-circuit sports broadcasts. These matches will cost $30 apiece and will be broadcast in Spanish with English available as a Secondary Audio Program (SAP) option.
What pay-per-view CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers will Fubo offer?
| Date | Time (ET) | Match |
|---|---|---|
| June 7 | 2 p.m. | Cayman Islands vs. Honduras |
| 3 p.m. | Anguilla vs. El Salvador | |
| June 10 | 9 p.m. | El Salvador v Suriname |
| 10 p.m. | Honduras v Antigua |
Later in the month, Fubo will offer a boxing pay-per-view event as 39-year-old former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will return to the ring for the first time in almost a year against Tyrrell Herndon. That bout will take place on Friday, June 27, and will go on sale via Fubo on Monday, June 23 for $25. Fubo will announce additional PPV events in the future,
Coupled with the DAZN partnership announcement and the presumed acquisition by Disney, this appears to be Fubo taking another step toward being an even more full-service sports streaming option.
