HBO Max adding new episodes of ‘The Howard Stern Show’
A new deal with SiriusXM will allow HBO Max to add weekly episodes of Stern’s long-running show.
The self-proclaimed “King of All Media” has found his way to streaming. As announced on Monday, Warner Bros. Discovery has a deal with SiriusXM to release weekly filmed episodes of “The Howard Stern Show” on HBO Max, with new episodes debuting on the streamer next month.
Key Details:
- He’s coming: HBO Max has a deal to begin streaming new episodes of “The Howard Stern Show.”
- Weeks away: The series will debut on HBO Max on Thursday, Sept. 17.
- Follow the trend: HBO Max has found its own way to add creator content.
Episodes of “The Howard Stern Show” will premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 3:01 a.m. ET, with future episodes being released on subsequent Thursdays. Stern’s SiriusXM show will be adapted into a watchable episode for HBO Max as part of the arrangement.
“As the ‘King of All Media,’ I am honored to bring my SiriusXM show to HBO Max, and through HBO Max to worldwide distribution,” Stern said. “For years, my SiriusXM show has offered only brief video peeks. HBO convinced me to pull back the curtain and let the world watch; the amazing celebrities and musicians who drop by, our staff antics, and my conversations with Robin. Bringing my latest SiriusXM shows to HBO Max’s millions of viewers, every week, is a career highlight, and I’m thrilled to be joining the ranks of such prestigious television.”
The introduction of “The Howard Stern Show” gives HBO Max a way to follow the trend of adding creator-driven content to its platform. With HBO Max’s premium library of content, rolling out a big selection of podcasts like Netflix or cheesy short-form vertical dramas never felt like its style, but Stern’s iconic show is a good fit.
“Howard Stern has always been in a category of his own with an unmistakable, unique take on the world,” HBO Max CEO Casey Bloys said. “Howard has changed radio and media at large with his ability to draw the most out of his guests and cultivate a following like no other. We couldn’t be happier to welcome Howard to HBO Max and to partner with SiriusXM to bring ‘The Howard Stern Show’ to the platform.”
While the approach is slightly different, HBO Max is joining a quickly growing cohort of streamers that are turning to traditionally audio-focused creators with massive followings to attract users to their platform. Netflix has been turning to podcast studios — including SiriusXM — over the past year in an effort to compete with YouTube. While HBO Max’s deal with arguably the most successful radio show in history is somewhat different, the pivot to include video podcasts and radio shows is clearly becoming a cornerstone of the streaming playbook as repeat engagement becomes far more important than subscriber growth and flashy premieres.
