Hulu gives ‘How to Die Alone’ the axe
The series has been canceled after one season, though its producer and star wants to shop it elsewhere.
The life cycle of a TV show can be filled with promise. When a show first premieres, the hopes are always high that it will be the next big smash-hit and will continue for another seven or eight seasons. Unfortunately for Hulu’s “How to Die Alone,” those hopes have officially hit rock bottom. As first reported by Variety, Hulu has canceled the series after only a single season.

“How to Die Alone” follows the story of Mel, an employee at John F. Kennedy Airport who is just floating through life. She’s never been in love, and her ambition is essentially dead. But when she suffers a near-death incident, she realizes it’s time to start actually living her life, even if it means taking a few risks.
The series was brought to Hulu through Onyx Collective, a Disney-owned brand that produces projects made by artists of color. “How to Die Alone” was first released in September 2024, to almost universally positive reviews. Unfortunately, it seems those reviews weren’t enough to drive a large audience to the show.
There is a slim chance that “How to Die Alone” is picked up elsewhere. The show’s star and creator Natasha Rothwell told Variety she was “shocked, heartbroken and frankly, baffled” by the decision not to continue it, she will be shopping it to other streaming services and outlets.
“Representation isn’t just about visibility — it’s about ensuring that our stories, our existence, and our cultural contributions are not erased,” Rothwell said.
Fans of the series who want to see it live on may want to consider writing to Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, and other streamers giving it their endorsement. Large-scale fan campaigns have helped save shows in the past, helping to convince other platforms that they would follow a given show to its new home.
