What you need to know about pausing a Hulu subscription
Can you pause a Hulu subscription?
You can! Hulu allows subscribers to pause their billing if they wish, instead of forcing them to cancel if they want to voluntarily suspend access to their account temporarily and not be billed. This feature is available to standalone Hulu subscribers, as well as Hulu + Live TV customers.
Disney Bundle subscribers are not eligible to pause their subscriptions, so if you get Hulu as part of a package with Disney+, ESPN Unlimited, or HBO Max, you will have to cancel to stop being billed.
How long can you pause your Hulu subscription?
Hulu subscriptions can be paused for up to 12 weeks (around three months). At the end of your selected duration, your Hulu subscription will automatically resume at the prevailing rate unless you cancel your account.
How to pause a Hulu subscription
- Open Hulu in your web browser.
- Go to the Settings menu, then click Account.
- Locate Your Subscription.
- Find Pause Your Subscription, then click Pause.
- Set your pause duration and click Submit.
Can you reactivate a paused Hulu subscription early?
Yes, if you want to unpause your Hulu subscription earlier than you anticipated, just return to the Account page in your profile settings and reactivate it.
Why you might want to pause Hulu
Pausing Hulu instead of cancelling it allows the streamer to preserve your watch history, chosen settings, recommendations for future views, and other customized aspects of your Hulu subscription. If you cancel Hulu and come back to it later, you risk wiping away these aspects of your account.
Pausing is perfect for any Hulu subscribers who are going on a long vacation or business trip. Essentially, whenever you’re going to be unable to access Hulu for long enough that you don’t want to feel stuck paying for it, it’s a good opportunity to pause your subscription.
Even if you’re staying right where you are, but Hulu doesn’t have any great TV shows or movies coming out for a while, pausing is a good idea. You can always circle back to the streamer when you see that something appealing is arriving on Hulu again.
The standalone Hulu app may be shutting down in the coming months, so the ability to pause Hulu subscriptions may not be long for this world. But for now, you can pause a Hulu subscription for up to 12 weeks instead of cancelling your account.
