Meet the witches, warlocks and vampires of ‘Coven Academy’

Freeform will roll out the season across three nights, while the complete 21-chapter story arrives on streaming Oct. 2.

'Coven Academy' drops all episodes on Disney+ and Hulu on Friday, Oct. 2

A magic boarding school in New Orleans, three teenage witches, charming warlocks, a brand-new vampire, forbidden romance… “Coven Academy” is not exactly hiding what kind of show it wants to be. And that sounds pretty fun. The new Freeform series comes from “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” (that’s a mouthful) creator Tim Federle, and there’s clearly a lot going on here between Briar discovering she’s a witch, supernatural wars bubbling underneath everything, mind reading, time bending, vampires, and whatever bad decisions are about to be made romantically. Here’s everything you need to know about “Coven Academy.”

Everything you need to know about ‘Coven Academy’

When will episodes of ‘Coven Academy’ come on Disney+?

“Coven Academy” premieres Thursday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform, but here’s where the release gets a little weird. Season 1 is made up of 21 shorter chapters, and the entire thing hits Disney+ and Hulu the next day, Friday, Oct. 2. So if you’d rather burn through the whole supernatural madness in one sitting, you can.

Freeform viewers get a different version of the experience. Nine chapters air on premiere night, another six arrive Thursday, Oct. 8, and the final six air Thursday, Oct. 15. It’s basically part weekly TV show, part giant streaming binge, which is an experiment I don’t remember seeing before.

Can you watch episodes of ‘Coven Academy’ for free?

Probably not, at least not through Disney+ itself. Disney+ doesn’t currently offer a free trial, so you’ll need a paid subscription if that’s where you plan to watch “Coven Academy.” Disney+ costs $12 per month with ads or $19 per month for the Premium plan without traditional ad breaks. The upside is that the full season arrives at once on Oct. 2. So if “Coven Academy” is the main reason you’re signing up, there’s no waiting around.

Disney+

Disney+ is a video streaming service with over 13,000 series and films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, The Muppets, and more. …

Disney+ has several plans with or without ads. Disney+ Basic with Ads costs $11.99 / month. If you don’t want ads, you can choose Disney+ Premium with No Ads, which costs $19.99 / month.

The Premium plan also offers an annual option for $189.99 / year ($15.83/mo.).

If you’d like to add Hulu, you can bundle the two services as well, but Disney+ is also continuing to integrate the two, which will soon be an all-in-one offering.

Sports fans can also bundle ESPN Select or ESPN Unlimited, with or without ads.

Disney+ most recently raised prices on September 23, 2026 — the fourth time in as many years.

The app supports unlimited downloads (on their Premium Plans), four simultaneous streamers, up to 7 profiles, 4K streaming, and includes hundreds of avatars.

The service includes 25+ original series, 10+ original movies, 7,500 past episodes, 100 recent movies, and 400 library titles, including the entire Disney Vault.

What is ‘Coven Academy’ about?

“Coven Academy” takes place in New Orleans and centers on three teenage witches attending an elite boarding school for magic. Which already sounds like a place where absolutely nobody should trust anybody. Power matters, old supernatural conflicts are still hanging around, and the students are also trying to deal with young love and relationships while learning how dangerous this world actually is.

Briar enters all of this as an outsider. She’s a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she’s a witch, then suddenly finds herself dropped into a world of spells, warlocks, vampires, and secrets connected to her own past. Sasha can read minds. Tegan can bend time. Jake is a powerful young warlock with a dangerous streak. And Ollie is a newly turned vampire who probably complicates things further just by existing. So yes, magic school. But also teen drama, romance, mystery, and apparently an ancient supernatural war lurking behind all of it.

Who stars in ‘Coven Academy’?

Malina Pauli Weissman leads “Coven Academy” as Briar, the New Yorker who finds out she’s a witch. Malachi Barton plays Jake, the charming but dangerous warlock, while Jordan Leftwich plays Sasha. Ora Duplass is Tegan, whose magical specialty is messing with time, and Louis Thresher plays Ollie, a newly turned vampire.

Tiffani Thiessen plays Miss Graves, the head of the school, while Devon Sawa also pops up as special guest star Mr. Cole — a charismatic warlock professor. The recurring cast includes Swayam Bhatia as McKenna, Brendon Tremblay as Alexander, Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora, BJ Harrison as Agnes, and Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Teese.

Who is making ‘Coven Academy’?

Tim Federle created “Coven Academy” and serves as an executive producer. He previously created “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” so teen characters dealing with big emotions, relationships, and a very specific world is familiar territory. Just, you know… this time some of them can read minds and bend time.
