About “The Substance”
Directed, written, co-edited, and co-produced by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (“Revenge”), “The Substance” stars Demi Moore as the faded movie star-turned-TV aerobics instructor Elisabeth Sparkle. After being unceremoniously dismissed from her long-running show after turning 50, Sparkle follows a tip about a black market drug that promises its customers a “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” version of themselves.
The catch: The Substance requires a transfer of consciousness between two bodies, leaving the inactive body unconscious. The active body requires daily injections of stabilizer lumbar fluid. And the two bodies are separate but one self, so the balance must be respected. Most importantly, you must switch every seven days when the stabilizer runs out— no exceptions.
Margaret Qualley co-stars as Elisabeth’s other self, the young and confident Sue, immediately hired as Elisabeth’s replacement and propelled to stardom. But as Elisabeth begins to self-destruct during her active days and Sue retaliates during hers, the balance quickly decays.
Along with Moore and Qualley, Dennis Quaid also stars in the body horror film, which has received high acclaim since its theatrical release on Sept. 20.
