What is ‘Wonder Man’ about?
Marvel and Disney have done a pretty good job at keeping the plot of “Wonder Man” under wraps. What has been released and reported is that the series does take a satirical look at Hollywood, superhero fatigue, and the tropes around secret identities.
Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) just wants to be taken seriously as an actor, which is why he has fought to keep his superpowers hidden; of course, it might also have to do with the fact that enhanced individuals are not allowed ot appear in Hollywood projects. Nonetheless, he auditions for the role of Wonder Man.
Williams’ acting endeavours bring him in contact with the infamous Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), who returns to Hollywood after his failed run posing as the Mandarin and being taken hostage by the Ten Rings. Also appearing in the series are X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, Demetrius Grosse, Joe Pantoliano, Josh Gad, Ed Harris, and more.
“Wonder Man” is a part of the relatively new Marvel Spotlight series, which aims to tell more grounded stories that exist in the larger MCU, but don’t rely on the decades of mythos. While knowing the films and shows that come before Marvel Spotlight titles might help you appreciate them, they aren’t necessary.
Marvel’s latest show has been lauded for its heart and charm, while eschewing the well-worn Marvel formulas in terms of narrative and pacing.
