Samuel L. Jackson to lead ‘NOLA King,’ gritty spinoff of ‘Tulsa King’
Jackson plays a former hitman turned empire-builder in this high-stakes ‘Tulsa King’ spinoff.
If “Tulsa King” Season 3 isn’t enough Taylor Sheridan for you, don’t worry, because there’s more where that came from. “NOLA King” is the next spinoff in Sheridan’s ever-growing universe, and this one stars none other than Samuel L. Jackson. He shows up first in “Tulsa King” this season as Russell Lee Washington Jr., but the plan is to spin him off into his own crime saga set in New Orleans. The setup sounds wild: a former prison buddy of Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi gets sent to take him out… and winds up building his own empire instead. “NOLA King” is still early in the process (production won’t start until February 2026), but here’s everything we know so far.
Everything you need to know about ‘NOLA King’:
When will episodes of ‘NOLA King’ come on Paramount+?
“NOLA King” doesn’t have an official release date just yet, but production is expected to kick off in February 2026. That means the series probably won’t premiere until later that year at the earliest. Like “Tulsa King,” it’ll stream exclusively on Paramount+, and given how that show rolls out episodes weekly, there’s a good chance this one will follow a similar schedule. No word yet on how many episodes there will be or exactly how long each one will run, but we’ll update as soon as we know more.
Can you watch episodes of ‘NOLA King’ for free?
Not exactly. Paramount+ doesn’t currently offer a free trial, so when “NOLA King” drops, you’ll need a paid subscription to stream it. Plans start at $8 per month with ads (Essential) or $13 per month for the ad-free Premium plan, which also includes offline downloads. Keep an eye out for promo deals, though — Paramount+ sometimes runs limited-time discounts for new subscribers.

What is ‘NOLA King’ about?
“NOLA King” is a gritty crime drama set in New Orleans, and it’s all about second chances — the dangerous kind. Samuel L. Jackson stars as Russell Lee Washington Jr., a former mob enforcer now out of prison after a 10-year stint. When we first meet him in “Tulsa King” Season 3 (which starts streaming Sunday, Sept. 21), he’s sent to Tulsa by the Renzetti crime family to take out Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone). But after seeing what Dwight’s built, Washington decides to try something similar back home.
That home is New Orleans — a city he abandoned over 40 years ago. As he tries to rebuild ties with his family and take control of the streets, he winds up on the wrong side of old friends, cops, and the very people who sent him. The series promises a blend of personal redemption, organized crime, and local politics, with New Orleans itself as a major character in the story. Think “Tulsa King” with more jazz, more heat, and a whole new power struggle starring one of the greatest actors of his generation: Samuel L. Jackson.
Who stars in ‘NOLA King’?
This one’s all about Samuel L. Jackson. The Oscar nominee headlines “NOLA King” as Russell Lee Washington Jr., a former hitman with a complicated past and a score to settle. Given Jackson’s decades of iconic roles, that’s reason enough to tune in. He’s no stranger to criminal underworlds or high-stakes showdowns, but this series promises a grittier, more personal take on power, legacy, and reinvention.
We’ll see Jackson first in “Tulsa King” Season 3, where his character gets introduced across several episodes before spinning off into his own story in New Orleans. Other cast members haven’t been officially announced yet, but with Taylor Sheridan and 101 Studios producing, you can expect a strong ensemble to back him up once the full cast list drops.
Who are the creators behind ‘NOLA King’?
“NOLA King” was created by Dave Erickson, who’s no stranger to the Taylor Sheridan universe. Erickson serves as the show’s writer, executive producer, and was originally set to be showrunner, though due to scheduling conflicts with “Tulsa King” and “Mayor of Kingstown,” he stepped away from that role shortly after the spinoff was greenlit. Erickson is known for his work on “Fear the Walking Dead” and currently helms Season 3 of “Tulsa King,” where “NOLA King” will get its backdoor introduction.
The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, with Taylor Sheridan and David C. Glasser also on board as executive producers. The idea reportedly originated from Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, as part of a larger plan to expand the “Tulsa King” universe — much like how “Yellowstone” sparked a wave of interconnected spinoffs.
How is ‘NOLA King’ connected to ‘Tulsa King’?
“NOLA King” is a direct spinoff of “Tulsa King,” and it all starts with a backdoor setup in Season 3. Samuel L. Jackson plays Russell Lee Washington Jr., a former prison buddy of Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) who’s sent to Tulsa by the Renzetti crime family to take Dwight out. But after seeing what Dwight’s built, Washington has a change of heart. That storyline sets up the launch of “NOLA King,” where Washington returns to his hometown of New Orleans to rebuild his life and rise to power — but doing so stirs up old enemies and dangerous new ones. Just like “Yellowstone” spawned its own spinoff universe, “Tulsa King” is now doing the same, and “NOLA King” is the first chapter in that expanded crime world.
Will there be a Season 2 of ‘NOLA King’?
There’s no official renewal yet, but it sure doesn’t feel like a one-and-done. “NOLA King” was built to expand the world of “Tulsa King,” not just ride its coattails. And when you’ve got Samuel L. Jackson stepping into the role, it’s hard to imagine this not turning into a multi-season run. Paramount+ hasn’t said anything publicly about Season 2, but the show’s whole setup (a complex backstory, a new city to conquer, and plenty of enemies from the past) makes it feel like they’re in it for the long haul. Of course, I’ve been wrong before (as my wife likes to remind me), but I wouldn’t bet against this one getting picked up again.
