What is ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ about?

“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” takes place in the 32nd century — 125 years after “The Burn,” a catastrophe that severely limited the range and scope of Starfleet by making warp travel essentially impossible. The show introduces the audience to a new group of cadets — the first to enroll at Starfleet Academy in more than 100 years.

The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery has unlocked the ability to use warp drive once again, and now Starfleet is ready to begin exploring again. But the galaxy is a very different place than it was before The Burn, and these cadets are stepping into a universe unlike anything they’ve ever known before.

Discovery to join the show as Jett Reno, and Robert Picardo will portray the Emergency Medical Hologram, reprising his role from “Star Trek Voyager.” Stephen Colbert will have an off-screen role as the voice of the Digital Dean of Students at the academy. Finally, Paul Giamatti will portray the season’s antagonist, Nus Braka, a part-Klingon, part-Tellarite with motivations of his own.
