Joel and Ellie are back — joined by new faces and even more danger in a seven-episode season.
It’s rare for a TV show to take what I think is one of the best video games ever made and actually get the adaptation right — but HBO pulled it off with the first season of “The Last of Us.” And even though I had a pretty good idea of what was coming (thanks to playing the game), it still delivered some unforgettable visuals and emotional gut punches. Now, with Season 2 around the corner (and me going in totally blind this time since I never played “The Last of Us Part II”), I couldn’t be more excited. Add to that the fact that Max is completely owning my Sunday nights, following up the “The White Lotus” Season 3 finale with another one of my favorite shows a week later? What a time to love TV. “The Last of Us” Season 2 premieres Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. ET on Max.

About ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2
Set five years after the events of Season 1, “The Last of Us” Season 2 picks back up with Joel and Ellie navigating a world that’s somehow become even more dangerous — and more emotionally complicated — than the one they left behind. Their bond, once unbreakable, is now under serious strain, and a new cast of characters threatens to upend everything they’ve built.
This season introduces Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), Dina (Isabela Merced), and Jesse (Young Mazino), along with a deeper look at the community Joel and Ellie have joined. While fans of the video game know just how intense this next chapter gets, the show promises a few curveballs of its own. With only seven episodes this season, every moment is set to count, leading to a highly anticipated finale on Sunday, May 25.

What other epic drama TV shows can you watch on Max?
If you’re looking for more gritty, emotional dramas like “The Last of Us,” Max has some incredible options. One standout is “Station Eleven,” a post-pandemic survival story that trades horror for hope but still delivers gut-punch emotion and world-building. Another is “The Leftovers,” a deeply philosophical series about grief, faith, and what it means to move on after loss. And if you want something a little darker, “True Detective: Night Country” — the latest season — dives into mystery and survival in a frozen, eerie setting that fans of the infected won’t want to miss. Watch them all with a Max subscription starting at $10 per month with ads.
