About ‘Waitress: The Musical’
Adapted from the 2007 film of the same name, “Waitress” premiered in 2015 at the American Repertory Theater before transferring to Broadway in 2016. The story follows Jenna Hunterson (originated by Jessie Mueller, replaced later by Bareilles), a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and an abusive marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna fights to reclaim a long-forgotten part of herself, inspired by the support of her fellow waitresses and an unexpected love.
The Broadway production, which was nominated for four Tony Awards and made history as Broadway’s first musical with an all-female creative team, ran until the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020 before it was remounted again in 2021 where it was filmed for future release. “Waitress: The Musical” premiered officially at the 2023 Tribeca Festival before it was released in theaters on Dec. 7, 2023.
“Waitress: The Musical” was directed by Brett Sullivan, with the musical being directed for the stage by Diane Paulus.
