Sharon Horgan stars in the new HBO Max comedy about a divorcee juggling dating, aging parents, and a grown son who still needs a lot of help.
Tara and I are big Sharon Horgan fans. We loved ‘Bad Sisters’ on Apple TV, so at this point I’m always interested in whatever she’s making next. That’s exactly why “Youth” jumped out at me. It’s about a 50-year-old divorcee trying to find love while juggling her ailing parents and her not-so-grown-up son. The setup already sounds like a very Sharon Horgan kind of show — messy, funny, adult, a little painful, and very rooted in real life. Here’s everything you need to know about “Youth” before it drops on HBO Max.

When will episodes of ‘Youth’ come on HBO Max?
The latest series from uber-creator Horgan will premiere on HBO Max on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. ET. The eight-episode season will roll out on subsequent Sundays through Nov. 1.
Can you watch episodes of ‘Youth’ for free?
Probably not for free. HBO Max doesn’t usually offer a standard free trial, so you’ll most likely need a subscription to watch “Youth” when it arrives. Right now, plans start at around $11 per month with ads or about $18.50 per month ad-free, so it’s a pretty simple setup depending on how you like to watch.

What is ‘Youth’ about?
“Youth” follows a 50-year-old divorcee, played by Horgan, as she tries to figure out sex and love while also taking care of her ailing parents and parenting her very much not fully grown son. Which, honestly, sounds like a lot. And also exactly the kind of life-stage chaos Sharon Horgan tends to write really well.
I’m a big proponent of shows that dramatize life for women over 50 because it’s an extremely underserved market. We should get all the messiness about dating when you’re no longer young, family obligations when you’re being pulled in 10 directions at once, and that weird middle stretch of life where you’re still parenting one generation while starting to care for another.

Who stars in ‘Youth’?
Sharon Horgan leads the series, which already gives it a huge boost for me because she’s so good at playing women who are sharp, frazzled, funny, and quietly falling apart all at once. Rupert Friend is also on board, which is a very strong get. Then the cast keeps getting better from there with Sharlene Whyte, Aran Murphy, and Robbie Gee joining the lineup as well. More recently, HBO added Harriet Walter, Anne Reid, and Freddie Fox in recurring roles, which is a seriously good group of actors to drop into a show like this.
Who is making ‘Youth’?
This is Sharon Horgan’s show through and through. She stars in it, writes it, and executive produces it, and the series is produced by her company, Merman. This is also Horgan’s return to HBO after ‘Divorce’ and it’s the first series to come out of her first-look deal with HBO and Merman.
