Season 5 of the FX on Hulu comedy/drama series “The Bear” is only about a month away from premiering, but showrunners are already whetting audience appetites for its return. A new one-off special episode of “The Bear” has dropped on Hulu, giving fans more insight into the backstories of two of the show’s main characters.

Key Details:

  • Surprise!: Hulu has released a previously unannounced special episode of “The Bear.”
  • Back in time: The episode is a flashback, and follows Richie and Mikie on a work trip to Indiana.
  • Stream it now: Fans can watch the episode on all Hulu plans.

The new, special episode of “The Bear,” entitled “GAry,” is a prequel, taking place before the show’s first season. It follows Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Richie and Jon Bernthal’s Mikey as they take a work trip to Indiana. The episode explores the pair’s complex relationship and peels back the layers of Mikey’s mental state, offering critical insight into both characters.

The two stars of the episode also co-wrote it, while series creator Christopher Storer stepped in to direct. Moss-Bachrach first revealed the surprise episode’s existence on social media to let fans know it was dropping.

The one-off special will help get fans excited for Season 5 of “The Bear,” which is expected to be the show’s last. “The Bear” Season 5 is set to premiere sometime in June, though the exact date has yet to be revealed.

How to watch the new special episode of “The Bear”

Fans can watch all episodes of “The Bear,” including the new special episode, with a subscription to Hulu. All Hulu subscribers will have access to the special regardless of plan; Hulu packages start at $12 per month for a standalone service, or $13 to bundle Hulu with Disney+.
