Stream These Comedy Mysteries Now That ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4 Is Over
From modern classics to iconic series, there are so many great mysteries to watch now that the latest murder at the Arconia has been solved.
It’s a wrap on yet another high-octane season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building!” The Emmy Award-winning murder-mystery comedy series starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez aired its Season 4 finale on Tuesday, Oct. 29 as the lead crime-solving trio finally found who stunted stuntwoman Sazz’s further life and career ambitions. And as is tradition for the series, the season ended as it began: in carnage, as celebration turns to suspicion and a beloved Arconia fixture becomes the latest victim.
To paraphrase the one and only Charles Brazzos, when one murder door closes, another opens. There will be more cases to crack in future seasons of “Only Murders,” but while this case is closed, don’t let your detective instincts get rusty. If you’re looking for more murder mysteries and criminally good comedies, tap back in and check out The Streamable’s recommendations for what to watch next!
Loved ‘Only Murders in the Building’? Watch ‘The Afterparty’ Next (Apple TV+)
After the party that is “Only Murders in the Building,” the only reasonable next step is Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty.”
Created by Christopher Miller (of Lord and Miller filmmaking fame), the two-season comedy anthology series follows a different murder mystery each season— and a new genre per episode. Its first season, which debuted in 2022, centered around a high school reunion afterparty that turns deadly. In comes Detective Danner (played by the always effervescent Tiffany Haddish) to grill the former classmates one by one and get their sides of the story. After cracking the case, Danner returns for Season 2 when at a wedding, “‘til death do us part” comes sooner than anticipated, resulting in a dead groom and a new room full of suspects.
Also anchoring both seasons are Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao, but otherwise, each season features a new cast, with comedy favorites like Ben Schwartz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou, Ken Jeong, Poppy Liu, Zach Woods, and more making up the suspect lists.
The series arrived at the party as the success of both “Only Murders” and the “Knives Out” franchise reinvigorated the murder-mystery genre, but where “The Afterparty” stands out against its contemporaries is its “Rashomon”-style storytelling as each suspect gets their own episode to give their interpretation of what happened. And like “Only Murders” Season 4’s Brothers Sisters’ documentary episode (or Season 1’s Emmy-winning, nearly-silent “The Boy from 6B”), the form adapts to the content: each episode is told through a different movie genre—from action flicks to erotic thrillers to animation—for a wild and wildly innovative multi-genre ride.
Unfortunately, “The Afterparty” got the ax by Apple TV+ last year, but both seasons of the gone-too-soon comedy are available on the streamer for your investigation.
The Afterparty
Nothing is as it seems in this hilarious murder mystery where each suspect’s story is told through a different film genre.
