A24’s latest disaster comedy movie “Y2K” is officially releasing in theaters on Friday, Dec. 6, but when will it come to an on-demand streaming service near you? “Y2K” takes place in an alternate 1999, a world where the Y2K bug is anything but innocuous. As the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, 1999, two loser friends crashing a high school party get ringside seats to the end of the world, when electronics begin to turn against humanity.
The movie has only managed to compile a 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes so far, but this isn’t the type of movie you go to for the critical acclaim. Movies from A24 always offer a unique perspective, and this disaster comedy promises to be full of laughs and mayhem alike.
When will ‘Y2K’ come out on streaming?
Because of the Pay-1 deal agreed to by the studio and Warner Bros. Discovery around a year ago, we know that “Y2K” will stream on Max when it’s finished with its exclusive run in theaters and premium digital rental and purchase platforms, such as Prime Video or the Apple TV store.
Just when that will be is open to question, but recent history suggests it might be a bit of a wait. Each A24 release of 2024 has taken over 100 days to arrive on Max after being released in theaters; Love Lies Bleeding” didn’t stream until 133 days after its release. “Civil War” took an even longer 154-day trip through cinemas, and “MaXXXine” spent 105 days in theaters and on premium rental/purchase platforms before its Max premiere.
There’s no reason to think that “Y2K” won’t have a similar window, though I don’t think it’ll attract the same kind of attention as “Civil War.” I predict the movie will come to Max on Friday, March 21, 2025, 105 days from its initial release date.
