Francis Ford Coppola first conceived of the idea of “Megalopolis” in the 1970s, but it hasn’t been ready for audiences until now. “Megalopolis” finally made its official theatrical debut on Friday, Sept. 27, ending a development cycle that lasted for nearly 50 years. Will the wait for it to hit an on-demand streaming service take as long?
Key Details:
- “Megalopolis” has been polarizing for critics since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
- The movie is being distributed in the United States by Lionsgate, making STARZ its most likely streaming destination.
- It will likely be more than 150 days before ‘Megalopolis’ is available to stream on STARZ.
Watch the Trailer for ‘Megalopolis’:
“Megalopolis” takes a classic story of betrayal from the depths of Roman history and translates it into the modern day. It follows Cesar Catilina, an architect who is granted a license to demolish the city of New Rome and build a new one in its place with the aid of a futuristic material that offers the power to control time and space. New Rome’s mayor is a loud voice for the status quo, and his daughter is caught between the two visionaries when she begins to fall for Cesar.
The movie has been splitting critical opinions ever since it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It currently sports a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but its cast and the controversies generated by the film will likely pique the curiosity of audiences who want to decide for themselves how good it really is.
Coppola sold a large part of his wine empire to self-finance the film, and it struggled to find distribution. Nonetheless, audiences now have the chance to see the visionary’s magnum opus and decide whether or not the years of planning and financial investment were worth it.
When Will ‘Megalopolis’ Stream on STARZ?
Since “Megalopolis” is being distributed by Lionsgate, the chances are best that it will become available to stream on the STARZ streaming service first. Lionsgate still owns STARZ, so unless another streamer swoops in with a licensing deal that’s too good to resist, STARZ is likely to be the first on-demand stop for the movie.
Lionsgate also believes in giving its movies extended theatrical windows in order to rake in as much revenue as possible. “Boy Kills World” is another 2024 Lionsgate release, and took 140 days to become available on STARZ once it was released in theaters. “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” came out on STARZ on Sept. 18, 152 days after its cinematic debut.
I think “Megalopolis” will premiere on STARZ on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, a full 154 days after bowing in theaters. That would be consistent with other Lionsgate releases this year and could get people talking about the movie again following the 2025 Academy Awards on Feb. 8, especially if it wins an award or two.
