Is ‘MaXXXine’ Streaming Now? When Will You Find Mia Goth’s New A24 Thriller on Max?

Viewers will appropriately find ‘MaXXXine’ on Max when it comes to streaming, but what about the first two films in the series, ‘X’ and ‘Pearl’?

The latest A24 horror flick MaXXXine is coming to theaters on July 5.

Maxine Minx is back and closer to superstardom than ever in “MaXXXine,” the newest A24 slasher film directed by Ti West and starring Mia Goth in the titular role. The film is a direct sequel to 2022’s “X,” and is the third film in the “X” series, following “Pearl.” It officially hits theaters on Friday, July 5, and is exclusively available in cinemas for the present.

Key Details

  • Much like “X” and “Pearl,” “MaXXXine” has gotten a warm reception from critics.
  • As an A24 film, “MaXXXine” will stream on-demand on Max first when it leaves theaters.
  • “Pearl” is currently available on Paramount+, but “X” is only available to rent or purchase via transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) at this time.

Watch the Trailer for ‘MaXXXine’:

“MaXXXine” picks up the story of Maxine Minx in 1985, several years after she escaped the amateur film production from hell. She’s looking for work in Hollywood’s horror film industry, but with the Night Stalker on the loose in Los Angeles, no young starlet is safe. Will Maxine be able to reach the professional heights she knows she’s capable of, even as dark forces have their sights set on her?

The third installment in the “X” series has been well-received by critics. “MaXXXine” has a 76% score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, and 83% of viewers who have caught a preview screening of the film agree that it’s a quality slasher flick. The film may be a bit uneven at times, but critics are heaping praise on its performances and visual style.

When Will ‘MaXXXine’ Be Available on Max?

MaXXXine will stream on Max when it's released, but the timing is less clear than the destination.

Thanks to a Pay 1 deal struck between the two sides in December 2023, A24 new releases are sent to Max first once they’ve finished exclusivity periods with theaters and streaming platforms that allow customers to rent or buy movies that are still cinematic exclusives, like the Apple TV store or Prime Video.

Because there haven’t been many marquee A24 releases since the deal with Max first began, it’s a bit tricky to nail down precisely when “MaXXXine” will be available to stream. “Love Lies Bleeding” was first released back in March, but won’t come out on Max until July 19, a period of 133 days despite the film making just $10 million at the box office. “Civil War” was released in theaters on April 12 (84 days ago and counting), and can be rented or purchased digitally but is not available to watch with a Max subscription yet.

With those two data points in mind, I’ll predict that “MaXXXine” will take 120 days to reach Max. If accurate, that will see the movie stream on the Warner Bros. Discovery flagship streamer starting Friday, Oct. 23, the perfect way to put fans in the mood for Halloween with a brand-new slasher.

Where to Stream ‘X’ and ‘Pearl’

X and Pearl are not available to stream on Max, despite its new Pay 1 deal with A24.

The licensing deal between A24 and Max was agreed to just months ago and does not encompass the full library of A24 films released in the past, at least not yet. Neither “X” or “Pearl” is streaming on the WBD service currently, though viewers do have options for watching the films.

Currently, Prime Video is the only way to stream “X,” as the film is not available on Paramount+, Max, Hulu or any other on-demand streamer with a subscription. Viewers can rent “X” in Ultra-High-Definition 4K starting at just $3.99, or purchase it in resolutions from standard definition to 4K starting at $14.99.

Pearl” is a bit easier to find. It’s available on the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan, which is allowing new customers to sign up for annual subscriptions for just $59.99, 50% off the standard price. You can also get a seven-day free trial of Paramount+ with SHOWTIME if you prefer the monthly rate of $11.99. Viewers will love Paramount+ with SHOWTIME thanks to its ad-free on-demand streaming, wide range of popular shows and movies, and an impressive lineup of live sports, including NFL football and UEFA Champions League soccer.
