Max is rolling out an updated user interface for its global subscribers

Streaming services are constantly thinking of ways to simplify their user experience; after all, the more users enjoy their time on an app, the more likely they are to continue paying for it. Max is the latest service to make an overhaul to its interface to help viewers get to the content that they want to stream more quickly and easily. The Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service has announced it will begin rolling out a new homepage menu experience to all global subscribers after tests revealed that test users found the updated layout to be a success.

Key Details:

  • Max’s new update moves menu tabs from the top of the screen into the left-hand menu.
  • Two new navigation pages — Categories and What’s New — are being introduced.
  • The new menu experience will roll out to customers gradually.

Previously, Max’s homepage had tabs along the top of the screen, as well as an abbreviated pop-out menu on the left side. The top of the screen had options including Home, Series, Movies, HBO, B/R Sports, and News, while the left menu held Search, Home, and My Stuff options.

With the update, all of the buttons across the top of the screen have been moved to the left-side menu. This simplifies the interface by putting both menu options in a single place. This will eventually be the layout for all customers in the United States, once the rollout is complete.

In addition to the migration of the menu buttons, Max is rolling out two new navigation pages. The What’s New page will showcase the latest arrivals on the streamer, while the Categories page is a new landing spot to browse by genre, brand, and thematic collections.

According to WBD, the changes are meant to help viewers explore the Max catalog and edit their preferences in a more intuitive manner. There will also be more room for content previews at the top, suggesting Max plans to expand its usage of trailers to help users preview new content.

The changes to Max’s UI resemble recent updates Netflix made to its interface, only in reverse. Netflix's latest update shifted browsing options from the left side of the screen to the top, though like Max’s new update, Netflix prioritizes the ability to show previews of new shows and movies on the homepage.

Max’s new user experience will roll out gradually across the globe, so if you don’t see it now, keep checking back and updating your app on various devices until you’ve got it!
