The movie debuted on Disney+ in March, and immediately topped Nielsen’s charts.
“Moana 2” is surfing a huge wave of popularity. The movie was the third-highest-grossing movie of 2024, raking in $1.06 billion at the global box office. Fan enthusiasm for the film has clearly not cooled even a single degree, according to newly-revealed data from Nielsen. The ratings measurement firm has unveiled numbers for the second week of March, and “Moana 2” flew to the top of the charts.

“Moana 2” was first released on Disney+ on March 12, and viewers flocked to the streamer to see it. According to Nielsen, “Moana 2” was streamed for 1.995 billion minutes between March 12 and March 16, beating out not only every other movie on streaming that week but every other title period.
There was some fierce competition during the week, as well. “Moana 2” was able to beat the ratings for Prime Video’s hit series “Reacher,” as well as the new sci-fi movie “The Electric State” starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt on Netflix. Both of those titles also surpassed 1 billion minutes streamed, but neither drew enough viewers to beat “Moana 2.”
“Moana 2” sees the titular heroine receive a mysterious call from relatives who journeyed far across the ocean long ago. She once again finds herself partnered with the fun-loving Maui to retrace their steps, steering toward distant Oceania and finding a brand-new set of adventures along the way.
The movie’s success on Disney+ is no surprise, considering the ratings for its predecessor. Despite first being released in 2016, “Moana” was the top streaming movie of 2024, amassing more than 13 billion minutes streamed and becoming the most-streamed movie since 2020.
Now, it appears “Moana 2” is on track to replicate that success. You can stream both movies with a subscription to Disney+. Ad-supported plans start at $10 per month, but if you pay just $1 more, you can add a subscription to ad-supported Hulu in the Disney Duo Basic Bundle as well.
