‘Scrubs’ is checking back in, and it’s about time

The wait for Season 2 of the “Scrubs” revival is finally over on Wednesday.

Part of me is still pinching myself that “Scrubs” got the gang back together for a reboot series. Not only that, but they’ve managed to do a good job of finding new stories to tell with the original characters, as well as mixing in a selection of new characters I actually care about.

Season 2 of the “Scrubs” revival is coming to Hulu on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and it’s easily the series I’m most excited to stream this week. But when I look past Season 2, I’m forced to wonder — is there a longer path for the characters beyond this season? Or will it simply continue with the same formula until it feels like the time has come to wrap it up?

Season 2 of “Scrubs” will pick up right where Season 1 left off. Dr. Cox is ill, and his sickness is giving J.D. and his fellow doctors fits. It’s not their only focus either; they’re still trying to show a new gang of interns the ropes and handle all the other responsibilities that come with actually running the show at Sacred Heart Hospital.

To be sure, I’m looking forward to getting the answer to a host of questions left over from Season 1 of the new “Scrubs.” Will Dr. Cox be OK? Will Asher ever grow the kind of confidence he needs to be successful in love and in medicine? Will Elliot find happiness in the arms of Sean Kelly, who’s back to make J.D. seethe with rage once again?

There are other questions left over from Season 1 that I’m not sure will get a true answer this season. Where’s Sam, and what’s the deal with J.D. and Elliot’s kids? Will we get to learn more about Turk and Carla’s daughters? It may be hard to pack satisfying stories for all these characters into the season, given that it has to focus on what’s going on in the hospital, and there are only 10 episodes to work with.

Nonetheless, I’m yearning for a little more world-building from the current season of “Scrubs.” Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be thrilled if the season is able to replicate the laughs and heart from its predecessor episodes, but if it stays so focused on a few original characters and the interns as they work, there may not be any room for the show to grow in the years to come.

Perhaps that’s the plan of Bill Lawrence, who created the new version of “Scrubs” as well as the old. Maybe he just wants to offer another look into the lives of these characters in their later years, and plans to bring the story to a close after a few seasons. That plan would certainly satisfy fans more than the poorly-fated attempt to carry “Scrubs” on with a ninth season that shifted focus from its main characters to a new batch of young doctors in 2010.

I have no idea what’s next for “Scrubs,” but I’m still in my honeymoon phase with the series for now. I don’t really care what happens from a larger narrative standpoint; for now, “Scrubs” is back, and I can’t wait to watch it again. New episodes of the “Scrubs” reboot series air on ABC at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesdays starting Sept. 30, and stream on-demand on Hulu the day after they’re broadcast live.

J.D. & Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time–medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.
