‘Super Troopers 3’ is perfect for streaming
I skipped the film in theaters, but I can’t wait to check it out on Hulu this week.
I’m self-aware enough to know that, at times, my TV show and movie preferences can be seen by some as a bit pretentious. But if my normal TV diet is indeed equivalent to prime rib, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for a little fast food every now and again. Extending the metaphor, “Super Troopers 3” certainly falls into the category of drive-through fare. But sometimes, that’s exactly what’s called for, and it’s the title I’m most excited to stream when it premieres on Hulu on Thursday, Nov. 5.
“Super Troopers 3” reunites the Broken Lizard comedy crew for what could be the biggest social event of the century: Farva’s wedding to Thorny’s sister. But when the engagement spirals into chaos, the Troopers must halt Thorny’s schemes to break the couple up, crack a new drug ring, and maybe even save the wedding itself.
As I said, this movie is very much an empty-calorie experience — the kind you don’t spend a ton of money to see in theaters. But now that it’s finally arriving on streaming, I’m not (too) ashamed to admit I’m probably going to laugh my head off at “Super Troopers 3” — at least in parts.
To be sure, the antics of the Broken Lizard crew are often immature and always over-the-top goofy. But the group’s comedic chemistry is impossible to deny, and for men of a certain age, they once represented the cutting edge in comedy. I’m glad to say that my perception of them as such is a long way in the rearview mirror, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still enjoy “Super Troopers 3.”
It’s also worth pointing out that Americans of nearly every political stripe can probably use some escapism this week. Election Day is on Tuesday, and no matter how you may feel personally about the eventual outcome, you probably need a time-out from the non-stop ads and the weighty issues of democracy that are dominating the public conversation.
“Super Troopers 3” won’t be for everyone, and even those looking for escapist humor might not find the movie to be their cup of tea. It’s a time-capsule comedy that isn’t going to break any new ground, but it was the absolute perfect movie to wait to watch on streaming.
Fans will be able to watch “Super Troopers 3” on Hulu starting on Thursday, Nov. 5. A standalone Hulu subscription costs $12.49 per month, but customers who want to bundle it with Disney+ can do so for just $0.50 per month more and watch Hulu titles directly from the Disney+ app.
Super Troopers 3
When Farva’s wildly over-the-top Indian engagement to Thorny’s sister spirals into chaos, the Super Troopers must navigate Thorny’s schemes to break up the relationship, while trying to crack a pernicious new drug ring — all to save the day and maybe the wedding itself.
