Woody and McConaughey are ‘Brothers’ and I can’t wait to watch
The premise of the Apple TV series is funny enough, but is also easy to fumble. I’m excited to see if Matthew McCanaughey and Woody Harrelson pull it off.
Are Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson actually related? We may never find out the true answer, but the question has plagued fans ever since McConaughey revealed the possibility in a 2023 episode of Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast.
While McConaughey is reluctant to take a DNA test to find out the truth, he’s more than willing to run with the joke. As evidence, McConaughey will star alongside Harrelson in the new series “Brothers,” which debuts on Apple TV on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The meta comedy is the title I’m most excited to stream this week, mainly because I’m curious to see if they can pull it off.
Real-life best buds Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves in “Brothers.” During a family hang-out, the dirty secret is revealed that McConaughey and Harrelson might actually be brothers, leading each on a journey of self-discovery to learn what family really means.

The show’s trailer is pretty light on details, showing little more than the basic premise that “Brothers” is built on. Harrelson and McConaughey appear destined for a series of goofy adventures in the series, but surely, there’ll be more to it than that…right?
In this day and age of scripted TV development, I wouldn’t put it past some studio to greenlight a series that was little more than the two actors goofing off on camera for 43 minutes each week. But Apple TV usually aims higher for its titles, and I’m assuming there will be some kind of emotional poignancy to the show.
But “Brothers” has to walk a fine line with its comedy, as well. It would be far too simple for the writers to let the meta concept of the show be 100% of the joke, but with stars with the comedic chops of Harrelson and McConaughey, it’s another thing that gives me anxiety about the series.
Ultimately, I trust Apple TV to make “Brothers” a series worth coming back for week after week. But there are plenty of potential pitfalls I’m keeping an eye out for ahead of the series premiere, and I’m intrigued to see if “Brothers” can dodge them and establish itself as a show that’s more than its premise.
