‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ is ready to boldy go again

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ is ready to boldy go again

The show’s fourth season premieres on Thursday, and it’s the title I’m most excited to watch this week.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 4 is the title I'm most excited to stream this week.

Longtime readers are well acquainted with my love of Star Trek by now. More than once have I named a Star Trek series as my favorite stream of the week, and it should come as no surprise that I’m hyped for the release of the next season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”

The series is releasing its fourth season on Thursday, July 23, and while it has had good moments and bad moments throughout its run, I’m still thrilled to see where the crew of the Enterprise heads this season. Dinosaurs, puppets, time travel, and more are in store for the legendary vessel, and I can’t wait to see how it all ends up.

Season 4 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will continue to follow Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The ship will continue to adventure through the stars, seeking out new life, reuniting with familiar faces, and confronting horrifying threats. Through it all, they strive to embrace a bright, hopeful future.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 4 will continue to follow a strongly episodic formula, but will also move the series closer to the timeline of “Star Trek: The Original Series.” That means that familiar TOS characters like James T. Kirk and Montgomery Scott will show up plenty in the fourth season, and other characters from this period in Trek history have been teased as well.

As I mentioned above, “Strange New Worlds” has had plenty of weak moments, for all the good, over the course of three seasons. But what has always brought me back to the show is the same thing that makes or breaks any Star Trek show: the chemistry of the crew. These actors love their characters, and their enthusiasm for the work they get to do on “Strange New Worlds” always shows through.

The show also isn’t afraid to lean into silliness at times; past seasons have included a crossover with the animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” and a musical episode, for example. Indeed, Season 4 will see the crew of the Enterprise get the felt treatment in one episode, transforming into puppets for reasons yet unknown.

It may feel a little goofy, but every classic Trek series has an episode or two that veered (intentionally or not) into abject silliness. At least with “Strange New Worlds,” that silliness is accompanied by intention. And the show has always reflected the themes of equality, unity, and diversity that every Star Trek title has included since the franchise’s beginning.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 4 will debut on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 23. The season will have 10 episodes, and a new episode will debut weekly until Sept. 24. Fans can watch it with a subscription to either Paramount+ plan, starting with the streamer’s $9-per-month Essential tier.

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” was ending after its fourth season. It has been renewed for a fifth.
