About Dark Star

In the cold vacuum of space, the crew of the starship Dark Star drifts aimlessly twenty years into their mission to destroy unstable planets. Their mundane existence is disrupted when they must deal with a mischievous alien mascot, a beach ball-like creature, and a sentient, philosophizing bomb, Bomb #20, that develops a serious existential crisis. The bomb's newly found self-awareness threatens to obliterate not only the unstable planet it's meant to destroy but the Dark Star itself, forcing the crew to use their limited resources and even more limited sanity to prevent cosmic annihilation.

Cast and Characters

John Carpenter directs Brian Narelle as Lieutenant Doolittle, the ship's commander slowly losing his grip on reality. Dan O'Bannon, who also co-wrote the screenplay, stars as Sergeant Pinback, a jittery and neurotic crew member masquerading as the ship's supply expert. Cal Kuniholm plays Boiler, a laid-back and often oblivious member of the crew, Dre Pahich is Talby who yearns to surf amongst the stars, while Adam Beckenbaugh is listed as the Commander Powell (deceased). Nick Castle, most famously known as Michael Myers in Carpenter's Halloween, portrays the alien mascot, adding a touch of physical comedy to the film.

What people like about Dark Star

Critics and audiences alike have praised Dark Star for its originality, humor, and innovative special effects, especially considering its low budget. Many appreciate the film's satirical take on science fiction tropes, highlighting its clever writing and memorable characters. The existential themes explored through the sentient bomb have also been a point of discussion, with some viewing it as a surprisingly profound commentary on the human condition. The film's cult status is a testament to its enduring appeal and its influence on subsequent science fiction comedies.

How to stream with ExpressVPN

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is an app that encrypts your internet connection and masks your IP address, allowing you to stream securely and bypass restrictions.

Why Use a VPN for Streaming?

- Bypass Geo-Restrictions: Many streaming services are geographically restricted. If you’re traveling outside the U.S., a VPN can make it appear as if you’re still in the country, giving you access to your subscriptions.
- Avoid ISP Throttling: Your internet provider might slow down your connection during high-bandwidth activities like streaming. A VPN encrypts your activity, preventing your ISP from throttling your speeds and ensuring a smooth, buffer-free experience.
- Increase Privacy: A VPN protects your data on non-secure public Wi-Fi networks by creating an encrypted tunnel, safeguarding your personal information while you stream.

How to get started with ExpressVPN:

- Sign Up: Purchase an ExpressVPN subscription.
- Download: Install the ExpressVPN app on your device.
- Connect: Open the app and connect to a server in the U.S.
