About Going to the Mat

Jace Newfield faces a daunting set of challenges when he moves from New York to Utah. As the new kid in town who happens to be blind, he carries a chip on his shoulder that alienates his peers. Perceived as arrogant and difficult, Jace realizes that his isolation is a result of his own defensive attitude rather than just his disability. To break down these social barriers and find a sense of belonging, he decides to join the school wrestling team. This demanding sport requires him to rely on his other senses and develop a level of trust with his teammates that he has never experienced before. Through the grit of the wrestling mat, Jace must transform his identity from a defensive loner into a respected athlete. He strives to prove that his vision loss does not define his capability or his character while attempting to earn the true friendship of his fellow students.
