About Harlan County U.S.A.

Harlan County U.S.A. documents the arduous coal miners' strike against the Brookside Mine, owned by Eastover Mining Company, in Harlan County, Kentucky, beginning in June 1973. The strike, triggered by Eastover's refusal to sign a contract with the United Mine Workers of America, stretched over a year. It was marked by violent confrontations between company thugs and the resolute miners, supported by their courageous women. Barbara Kopple contextualizes the strike by delving into the historical exploitation of miners and the UMWA's history. The film vividly portrays the miners' unwavering fight for fair treatment, highlighting the community's resilience in the face of adversity. This preserved film stands as a testament to their struggle.
