What to know about the new Scripps Sports Network FAST channel
Scripps Sports Network will include a selection of live events, game replays, and more.
The E.W. Scripps company is expanding its presence in streaming. The channel owner, which has been quietly accumulating sports rights in recent years, has announced that on Tuesday, March 24, it will launch a new free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channel called Scrips Sports Network, with programming to include some live events from its growing stable of sports rights.
Key Details:
- More sports: A new sports FAST channel from Scripps is launching Tuesday.
- Go live: The channel will offer National Women’s Soccer League games and other live events.
- Wide distribution: Scripps Sports Network can be found on The Roku Channel and other free platforms.
Scripps Sports Network (SSN) is set to offer a diverse lineup of programming. Unlike many sports-focused FAST channels, SSN will include some live games in addition to a wide variety of other programming, including replays, historic content, original series, and more.
Live events on SSN include 10 regular-season Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) games, 59 matches from the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) — including all NWSL matches on ION — and 12 regular-season women’s volleyball matches from Major League Volleyball (MVL).
Pro Cheer League, Athlos NYC, and National Arena League will also be shown on the channel, as well as the Women’s Fort Myers Tip-Off college basketball event during Thanksgiving week, and, who could forget, the iconic Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Despite Scripps having rights to games, there will be no live WNBA matchups on SSN, but the FAST channel will offer more than 100 hours of encore telecasts of games originally airing on ION. In addition, the channel will offer programming from the Florida Panthers and the NCAA’s Big Sky Conference. The channel has 10 new, original series in development as well; the first of these will include an in-depth conversation with veteran sports reporter Suzy Kolber, and the second will go behind the scenes with Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross.
“Our recent live sports streaming growth tells us that fans are hungry for more,” president of Scripps Sports Brian Lawlor said. “A dedicated 24/7 sports FAST channel allows us to further leverage our existing sports rights, create a platform for emerging league partnerships and grow our position in sports, particularly women’s sports, all while serving fans and marketing partners year-round.”
The channel is available now on The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, Prime Video, Amazon Fire TV and Alexa, Google TV Freeplay, Xumo Play, TCL tv+, TCL Channel, Plex, Local Now, Sports.TV and Tablo, with additional distribution partnerships planned in the future.
Roku Channel
The Roku Channel is a free, ad-supported streaming service that offers a broad mix of movies, TV shows, live linear channels, and original programming. Available to all viewers — not just Roku device owners — the service features licensed content from major studios alongside Roku Originals, which include exclusive series, movies, and specials previously produced for Quibi, as well as new original projects developed specifically for the platform.
