Plex announces new social features on the way
New features include a personalized rating system and a public discussion platform.
The announcement that Plex made on Wednesday is likely to be met with generally more positive responses than the one it made last month. In May, the streaming company announced that its popular Lifetime Plex Pass subscription was set to raise its price by $500. While the company did give interested cord-cutters plenty of warning to get in under the old price, the dramatic jump was jarring to many consumers. However, on Wednesday, Plex announced a more positive move, as the platform will begin rolling out new social features to help its global users connect with each other — and their favorite content — more easily.
Key Details:
- Let’s get together: New social features are on the way to Plex, the streamer announced Wednesday.
- Prediction market: Personalized predicted ratings will show viewers titles Plex thinks they will like.
- Send a pic: Users will be able to comment and react with images once they receive the update.
Top among the new features coming to Plex in the next few months is an update to its Lists function. Plex users can already create and manage personalized lists of movies, shows, or episodes, but later this year, the streamer will allow its subscribers to import existing lists from other platforms and react to and comment on friends’ lists as well.
Plex will also launch a new rating system that will predict how much it thinks viewers will like a new TV show or movie based on what they thought about titles that they have previously watched. This compatibility score will be tailored to each individual user and will take past ratings and viewer history into account.
Plex’s reactions are also getting an overhaul. Fans can react to content with emojis that better capture how a title made them feel, and can also react to reviews, discussions, and more with images instead of just text. Plex will allow its viewers to follow anything tied to the lists, movies, shows, cast, and crew they follow.
Additionally, Plex is adding a community Discussions forum that will let its customers post and comment directly on movies, shows, seasons, and episodes, joining the conversation with others who are interested in the same content as they are.
Discussions is rolling out first on Plex, and is due to launch later this month. Enhanced lists and the other features announced on Wednesday will be available throughout 2026.
