Can You Stream ‘Saw X’ at Home This Weekend?

The latest installment in the ‘Saw’ franchise is debuting in theaters this weekend, but how long will it take to reach streaming platforms?

Do you want to play a game? Fans of the “Saw” franchise already know the best answer to that question is no, but that won’t help them resist the newest entrant in that franchise: “Saw X,” which comes to movie theaters around the United States on Friday, Sept. 29.

“Saw X” follows the story of John Kramer, who fans know as the enigmatic serial killer Jigsaw. Set between the events of the first two “Saw” movies, “Saw X” centers on Kramer’s journey to cure his terminal brain cancer. Desperate for a solution, Kramer falls among con artists, but those swindlers soon realize what it means to take advantage of someone who seems weak and vulnerable, but in reality is a dangerous psychopath.

As it currently stands, “Saw X” has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed entry in the franchise to date. Critics have said the film has a surprising amount of humor, and plenty of nostalgia for fans who have been watching the franchise for nearly two decades now.

Watch a Trailer for ‘Saw X’

“Saw X” is only available in theaters at present, so fans who want to hide under a blanket while they watch will need to bring one with them. The movie is being distributed by Lionsgate, which makes it a bit difficult to determine where it will be available to stream once it leaves theaters.

Lionsgate owns its own streaming platform in STARZ, so there’s a good chance that streamer will be the first to get its hands on “Saw X.” More recent entrants in the franchise like “Saw 3D” and “Saw VI” are housed on that service, so that’s The Streamable’s best guess on where “Saw X” will head first. There’s a chance it also ends up on Peacock, which shares several “Saw” movies with STARZ (more on that below).

The question of when “Saw X” will be available on STARZ is a bit easier to answer, though users may be disappointed with the result. Lionsgate clearly believes that a long theatrical window is the best way to get value from its movies, as its recent comedy “Joy Ride” — which was released on July 7 — is still only available for rental or purchase on platforms like Prime Video. It’s been 84 days since “Joy Ride” was made available in theaters, suggesting that Lionsgate thinks of 120 days as the standard pre-streaming window for its movies.

“Saw X” will likely not be available to stream on STARZ until Jan. 23, 2024, which is 119 days after its theatrical debut. That will allow Lionsgate to unleash the film on a Friday instead of a Saturday, and take advantage of viewers likely to be stuck inside on a cold winter weekend.
