CBS to Offer Super Bowl LVIII in 4K via Select Providers in First For Network

Fox has broadcast NFL games in 4K for years, but this will mark the first time CBS will offer a football game in Ultra-High-Def 4K.

Are you ready for the big game, NFL fans? Super Bowl LVIII is set for Sunday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET, and while the contestants have yet to be determined, the game’s host channel CBS is announcing fans will be able to enjoy the game as never before on that network. For the first time in 2024, CBS will offer the Super Bowl in Ultra-High-Definition 4K, the best screen resolution widely available to consumers.

  • The vivid colors and high resolution of 4K streaming make it the ideal way to watch live sports.
  • CBS will offer 4K broadcasts on multiple pay-TV providers, and its 1080p broadcasts will be offered in High Dynamic Range (HDR).
  • As of now, it appears unlikely the 4K stream of the Super Bowl will be available on Paramount+.

Has CBS Ever Offered NFL Games in 4K?

CBS is one of the NFL’s longest-standing broadcast partners, but this is the first time the channel has ever offered a game in 4K. Because 4K offers four times the screen resolution of a standard high-definition broadcast, events require significantly more bandwidth to broadcast in 4K than they do in lower screen resolutions. That can require expensive equipment upgrades, which is a big reason why CBS has not offered 4K broadcasts before.

The 4K feed of Super Bowl LVIII will be offered through multiple cable and satellite companies, as well as live TV streaming services; DIRECTV STREAM and Fubo are the top live TV platforms that allow users to stream live events in 4K, so while it hasn’t been confirmed that they’ll offer the UHD Super Bowl broadcast, there’s a good chance you’ll find the 4K feed of Super Bowl LVIII on CBS on both streamers.

At the moment, it does not appear the 4K feed of the Super Bowl will be available to stream on Paramount+. Both Paramount+ tiers will offer a 1080p feed of the Super Bowl live, and that 1080p feed will be offered in High Dynamic Range (HDR), which brings improved contrast ratio and better color accuracy to the broadcast.

Where Will You Be Able to Watch Super Bowl LVIII in 2024?

As CBS will host the Super Bowl this year, there are four top live TV streaming services that carry the channel in most markets. DIRECTV STREAM is the best bet for customers thanks to its five-day free trial, limited-time offer of $25 off per month for the first two months of service, and free access to Paramount+ with SHOWTIME for the user’s first three months, as well as access to select events in 4K.

Fubo comes with a free trial as well, but its length depends on what time of month you sign up for the service. Users have to upgrade to the Elite plan or higher to watch 4K events with Fubo, but with this service, you’ll also be able to watch regional sports networks from Bally Sports and other providers, as well as the balance of the NFL playoffs on CBS, Fox and other channels.

Hulu + Live TV doesn’t offer the ability to stream live content in 4K, nor does it have a free trial. However, it does carry CBS in most areas, and it allows customers free access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ as part of their subscription with every account starting at $76.99 per month.

YouTube TV plans start at $72.99 per month, but users will have to upgrade with the $9.99 monthly 4K Plus add-on to watch any events in 4K on the service. It offers some new users a free trial as well, but not all new customers will get access to the same free viewing period.
