Streaming News: ‘Doctor Who’ Specials, ‘Slow Horses’ Return

“Doctor Who” Releases 60th Anniversary Specials Trailer

Allons-y, fellow Whovians! BBC has released the first official trailer for the highly anticipated “Doctor Who” 60th Anniversary specials, which will see David Tennant return and companion Catherine Tate reprising her fan-favorite role as Donna Noble.

Watch the trailer for the “Doctor Who” 60th Anniversary specials below:

The classic long-running British sci-fi series, which originally debuted in 1963 and ran through 1989 before it was rebooted in 2005, follows the adventures of a rogue Time Lord who goes by the name “the Doctor” as he travels (and saves) the universe with the help of a series of companions in his TARDIS, a stolen time machine. Able to regenerate the Doctor has so far been portrayed by 13 actors in the series’ history, with “Sex Education” star Ncuti Gatwa due up to succeed as the Fifteenth Doctor. If you can follow the wibbly wobbly, timey wimey timeline, Tennant, who originally played the Tenth Doctor, is also now the current incarnation for the specials as the Fourteenth Doctor.

Gatwa will make his first appearance as the Fifteenth Doctor in the new three-episode set of specials, which will also feature Neil Patrick Harris as the Toymaker, a Classic Who villain last seen in the 1960s, and Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Head of Scientific Research at the military organization UNIT.

The “Doctor Who” 60th Anniversary specials will air in November with the exact dates still to be announced. BBC will air the episodes in the United Kingdom, and Disney+ will be the host for the rest of the world.

Apple Releases First Look of “Slow Horses” Season 3

Apple TV+ is riding fast toward its upcoming third season of the BAFTA-nominated espionage drama “Slow Horses.”

The streamer has shared the first look of the junior season, which will be adapted from “Real Tigers,” the third novel in the Mick Herron spy series “Slough House.”

Led by Gary Oldman, “Slow Horses” follows Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but misanthropic leader of a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents “who serve in a dumping-ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House.” The ensemble cast also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Freddie Fox, Chris Reilly, Samuel West, Sophie Okonedo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan, and Jonathan Pryce. Sope Dirisu and Katherine Waterston will also join the series for its third season.

In season three, “a romantic liaison in the British embassy in Istanbul threatens to expose a buried MI5 secret in London. When Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the fight, they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI5 itself.”

The six-episode Season 3 of “Slow Horses” will premiere globally on Friday, Dec. 1 with its first two episodes, followed by one new episode weekly each Friday through Dec. 29. Apple TV+ has already announced a fourth season set to be adapted from the fourth novel, “Spook Street.”
