ESPN’s purchase of NFL RedZone, NFL Network is coming to a vote
NFL owners are being informally told to expect a vote on the sale of NFL Media to Disney next month.
The oft-discussed but never-consummated deal between ESPN and the NFL for the sale of NFL Media could be about to close. Front Office Sports is reporting that NFL owners are informally being told to expect a vote on the sale of NFL Media to Disney, the surest sign yet that an agreement between the two sides is in the offing.
Key Details:
- Popular properties: A deal would see ESPN take control of NFL RedZone, as well as other properties.
- A fair swap: ESPN could send an equity stake of itself to the NFL in the swap.
- Looking ahead: A deal could strengthen the relationship between the two ahead of new NFL media negotiations.
The NFL has been considering a sale of NFL Media for years, and Disney has long been considered the most likely partner. But this is the closest that talks have come to ending in an actual agreement between the league and Disney for a sale of NFL Media properties like NFL Network and NFL RedZone.
A deal might be valued as high as $2 billion and could see the NFL take an equity ownership stake in ESPN. Disney has been looking for a new partner for ESPN, which will help it launch its new, forthcoming streaming service and make other moves to secure its future.
A vote on the sale of NFL Media to ESPN would happen sometime next month, which is also when the new ESPN streamer is expected to launch. The service will offer everything found on linear ESPN channels, and will cost $30 per month as a standalone offering, and it will also be available at a discount as part of the Disney Bundle.
A sale of NFL Media to ESPN could also deepen relations between the league and the channel as the NFL prepares for new media deal negotiations. The league can opt out of its current NFL deals after the 2029 season, and most expect it to do so. ESPN might get a leg up on other competitors in those discussions if it’s partially owned by the NFL.
No official meeting has been called for league owners to vote on the sale, and talks could still come to naught in the end. Still, this is the surest sign yet that the NFL is ready to move forward on a sale of its media holdings to ESPN, possibly in exchange for an equity stake in the channel.
