‘Gunsmoke’ was one of the most-streamed shows in March
According to Nielsen, ‘Gunsmoke’ broke into the top-10 list of acquired streaming shows during the second week in March.
One of Hollywood’s earliest smash-hit shows is still resonating with audiences. That’s according to data from Nielsen, as cited by The Hollywood Reporter, which found that the 1955 television series “Gunsmoke” was one of the most-watched TV series in the month of March.
Key Details:
- “Gunsmoke” rose to the No. 8 spot on Nielsen’s list of top acquired streaming programs in the second week of March.
- The show was streamed for more than 10 billion minutes in 2024.
- Viewers can stream “Gunsmoke” on Paramount+, Peacock, or Pluto TV.
According to Nielsen’s data, “Gunsmoke” was the eighth-most-watched acquired streaming title during the week of March 3 through 9. It accounted for 646 million minutes of streaming time in that week alone, more than even contemporary hits like “Yellowjackets.”
It’s worth pointing out that “Gunsmoke” has more than 400 episodes to stream, which helps inflate its numbers a bit. Even so, the show’s popularity is hard to argue; it had more than 10 billion minutes streamed throughout 2024. As can be expected, “Gunsmoke” has an audience that skews older, with more than half its viewers being 65+.
Prime Video’s series “Reacher” was the most-watched show overall during the week of March 3 through 9, garnering 1.4 billion viewing minutes. “Family Guy” saw the most viewing of any acquired show, attracting 1.2 billion minutes of watching time during the week.
The popularity of “Gunsmoke” shows the power of streaming to reach back in time and revive a series that has been off the air for years, or even decades. There’s a clear appetite for such shows; a recent survey conducted by Tubi and The Harris Poll found that 66% of viewers across every age group are enjoying the ability to discover shows 10 years old or more.
“Gunsmoke” certainly fits that bill. The series is available to stream now on several outlets, including Paramount+, which has Seasons 7 and 8 available. Peacock carries Seasons 7 through 14, but fans can watch all 20 seasons on-demand with ads on Pluto TV as well.
