Paramount to combine all streamers on single tech stack
Paramount to combine all streamers on single tech stack
The work will be completed by June, according to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison.
Even before Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison officially took over the big chair in 2025, he was clear on his desire to improve Paramount’s streaming services from a tech standpoint. Ellison has now provided an update, saying that Paramount will achieve a major technical milestone in the second quarter of this year that should benefit not only cord-cutters but the company’s bottom line as well.
Key Details:
- Coming together: Paramount will unify the tech stacks of Paramount+, Pluto TV, and BET+ in Q2.
- Stronger ties: BET+ and Paramount+ will be combined in June.
- Not so serious: Ellison once again tried to downplay the job cuts Paramount will see after a WBD acquisition.
Speaking at the FII Priority Summit, Ellison said that the tech stacks of Paramount+, BET+, and Pluto TV will be unified by the second quarter of 2026. The move will help Paramount weed out redundancies and will hopefully lead to a better-quality app experience for subscribers, while also eliminating unnecessary expenses from running and maintaining multiple platforms.
BET+ will go beyond simply uniting on the same tech stack as its fellow Paramount streaming services. Earlier this year, the company announced that it had bought out Tyler Perry’s stake in the streamer, and would be merging it with Paramount+ in June. As of now, it is believed that Pluto will remain its own stand-alone service, but if the costs of operating the free streamer outweigh the returns, you could see it become part of Paramount+ in the future.
Ellison also had the chance to speak about the company’s impending merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. WBD’s board has set a date of April 23 for shareholders to vote on Paramount’s purchase offer. An anticipated $6 billion in job cuts is on the way once the merger is complete, but Ellison once again downplayed the idea that the combination will mean Paramount must shrink.
“Over the last six months since we’ve been at Paramount, we’ve taken the film slate from eight films when we bought the company to 16 movies that will be released this year exclusively in theaters,” he said. “We’ve green-lit 11 shows to grow Paramount+. We brought the UFC onto our platform, the [UEFA] Champions League. We’ve invested significantly in content. So I think this narrative of ‘you can’t operate the company more efficiently by growing’ is actually a false one.”
The unified tech stack for Paramount streamers should prove to be a boon to the company, but it will hopefully lead to a boost in quality for Paramount’s streaming customers as well. Time will tell how the integration will play out, but cord-cutters should know in the next few months.
