What are the password-sharing rules on Paramount+?
What are the password-sharing rules on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has been one of the most lenient streamers regarding password sharing, but that might be about to change.
As recently as 2023, Paramount officials signaled no intention to crack down on password sharing. At that time, executives said that password sharing did not present a “major headwind” to the streamer’s growth efforts, and Paramount+ stood back and watched as competitor after competitor enacted restrictions to stop password sharing.
But that lax attitude could be about to change. Paramount is under new ownership, with CEO David Ellison ready to lead the company into the future after its merger with Skydance Media. Will password-sharing rules come about on Paramount+ as a result? Learn more about password sharing on the streamer here.
Everything you need to know about sharing a Paramount+ account
Does Paramount+ prohibit password sharing?
Yes, the terms of use on the Paramount Skydance website specifically prohibit the sharing of login credentials for a Paramount+ account.
Specifically, Section 10 (Acceptable Use), subsection 1, paragraph L prohibits access to “any Service that we have not authorized you to access (including password-protected areas), link to password-protected areas.” It also forbids users from any “attempt to access or use another user’s Account or information.”
Section 10, subsection 2 expounds on this, stating ” Unless the express terms of your Subscription plan state otherwise, you are not permitted to share your Subscription plan or access to your Account (including your password) with anyone other than members of your household.”
Does Paramount enforce password-sharing restrictions?
There are no accounts of Paramount+ actually making an effort to stop users from sharing passwords, despite the behavior being a technical violation of the streamer’s terms of service. It appears Paramount isn’t sweating customers sharing each other’s login credentials, so for now, consider it business as usual if you are using a Paramount+ subscription paid for by someone else.
Is Paramount+ planning a password-sharing crackdown?
There are no public plans to punish viewers who share account credentials on Paramount+ for now, but that could change. Ellison and the new ownership team at Paramount Skydance have promised upgrades for the streamer, including more tech upgrades.
That could allow Paramount to better track when its service is being used outside an account owner’s home, and if so, password-sharing restrictions could well be on the way. I’d be very surprised if Paramount didn’t announce a crackdown on password sharing of some kind in the next few years.
