Plex announces big changes coming to its mobile experience

The Plex mobile user experience is about to see some big changes.

One of the coolest free streaming services on the market is making some big changes to its user experience. Plex has announced that starting in early 2025, it will roll out major improvements to its mobile app interface, essentially rebuilding its apps from the ground up to help customers better find the content they want to watch the most, without a ton of hassle.

Key Details:

  • The Watchlist feature is being given a more prominent place in the Plex interface with the upgrade.
  • Personal media libraries will also have their own tab in the new Plex layout.
  • Plex TV apps will also see the update after it rolls out on mobile phones.

Plex is so intriguing because of the different ways users can interact with the streamer. It’s got hundreds of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels and thousands of on-demand titles available at no cost, and a universal search that allows viewers to find where they can stream a title across dozens of popular on-demand apps like Disney+ and Prime Video.

The updated user interface will be all about viewers. Core features are being brought to the forefront instead of hidden in “hamburger” menus, and Plex’s popular Watchlist function is getting its own dedicated spot at the top of the screen.

“Our mission is to create a global community where everyone can discover, experience, and share all of the entertainment that matters to them,” Plex said when announcing the new updates. “This rebuilt interface is just another way we’re staying true to this mission.”

Plex users who upload their own private media onto Plex servers will also love the ability to browse their libraries through a dedicated tab. These viewers will be able to favorite libraries as well, and there will be more personalized features coming to private media tabs in the future as well.

Other updates include a variety of reorganizing features such as streamlining the user menu, where you can quickly access your personalized details, such as your profile, watch history, friends, and streaming services you’re subscribed to separately all in one place. In addition, show and movie pages will be loaded with more artwork, giving watchers a more immersive browsing experience.

The new Plex UI is coming first to its mobile apps in early 2025 and will roll out for smart TVs soon after.

Plex

Plex is a free streaming service that includes on-demand access to 50,000+ movies and TV shows. The service also offers 1,100+ free-to-stream live TV channels in 193 countries. Users can also connect Plex to their computers to stream and share any media they have on their hard drives.

…

The service also offers a universal watchlist - simply add the streaming services you subscribe to and Plex becomes an automatic launch portal for any show or movie. This saves you the trouble of looking up what is streaming where.

Plex offers a subscription tier that offers even more features for people who want more functionality, but it packs a powerful punch even in its free version.

The service offers 11 live local news channels, including outlets in Detroit, Atlanta, Memphis, Jacksonville, Tulsa, Boston, and Seattle.

Plex even offers a Plex Arcade option where you can play dozens of Atari classics plus your own collection of game ROMs and emulators on your favorite devices.

This is an incredibly flexible platform that’s perfect for fans of any media.
