Sling TV’s new Pause Extra lets subscribers pause with benefits
Pause Extra allows customers to watch AMC+ free, get unlimited DVR, and use other benefits of a paid Sling subscription without paying full price.
One of the best things about receiving broadcast and cable channels through a live TV streaming service like Sling TV is that nearly all of them are on monthly plans, so you can decide to cancel your subscription at any time with no penalty. However, in nearly all cases, that means that you will lose all of your account’s benefits, even if you decide to come back to your account later. Sling is taking that innovation one step further, as it has rolled out a new program called Pause Extra, which allows viewers to walk away from their accounts for a few months and still receive some benefits for a cost of $5 per month instead of the regular $46 monthly rate.

Cord Cutter News was the first to detail all the benefits Sling customers can get if they decide to use the new Pause Extra feature. Those benefits start with free access to AMC+, unlocking shows like “Interview with the Vampire” and many other titles.
Pause Extra users can choose to pause their Sling accounts for one, two, or three months. Every month you’re paused, Pause Extra will accrue a $5 credit toward your next paid month of Sling service. For example, if you decide to pause for two months, you’ll get $10 off when you decide to go back to a full membership.
Customers who sign up for Pause Extra can also enjoy unlimited DVR while using Sling Freestream, the ad-supported service with more than 600 free channels. In addition, Pause Extra users will still be able to accumulate points toward cash prizes and other rewards through the Sling TV loyalty program which became available to all subscribers last April.
There is one minor caveat with Sling’s Pause Extra feature: only customers who signed up directly through Sling are eligible for the program. Customers taking advantage of promotions (including prepay bundles, annual plans, and free trials), customers using only gift cards as payment, customers who signed up through their devices, customers who signed up through an affiliate retail partner, or customers using Amazon Pay, Google Billing, Apple Billing, Roku, PayPal, etc. cannot use it at this time.
The ability to pause a subscription instead of canceling an account and losing access to your preferences and viewing history is a very customer-friendly approach. For $5 per month, Sling viewers can continue accessing key benefits of their accounts, without having to pay the full price of a Sling channel package for a while.
