STARZ adds 530k subscribers in quarter following Lionsgate split
The streaming service and premium cable channel had a total revenue of over $330 million in the quarter.
To say that STARZ is in a period of transition would be something of an understatement. The company has completed a yearslong process of separation from Lionsgate, its former parent company, and is now prepared to move forward as an independent firm. STARZ reported quarterly earning results for its fiscal fourth quarter on Thursday, and the data held both good news and bad news for the company.
Key Details:
- Subscriber jump: The STARZ streaming service gained more than 500,000 customers in the quarter.
- Taking a haircut: The company also disclosed a restructuring charge of $177.4 million.
- All alone: STARZ now begins a new phase of independent corporate existence.
First, the good news. The STARZ streaming service gained 530,000 subscribers as compared to the previous quarter, ending with 12.3 million total. Including the STARZ linear channels, the company now has 18 million customers, up 320,000 from the previous quarter — though it seems those gains came from the streaming side of the business.
Financially speaking, STARZ had to disclose a $177.4 million restructuring charge, which it says was due to a “reassessment” of its content portfolio. Total revenue hit $330.6 million during the quarter, and it’s still targeting an OIBDA of $200 million for the 2025 calendar year.
“For the quarter, we are very pleased to report the company’s strong operating and financial results, and excellent subscriber growth. We delivered significant U.S. OTT subscriber gains, growing the total subscriber base in the U.S. by almost 2%,” CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said.
It’s a new day for STARZ, which now begins life as a standalone company. In April 2025, STARZ and Lionsgate won approval from shareholders to split from one company into two. Henceforward, STARZ is on its own, either to continue operations itself or to potentially attract attention from a larger company that may want to acquire it.
It will be fascinating to see what becomes of STARZ going forward. The company is still reliant on linear channels that probably don’t have much of a long-term future, and with only 12 million streaming customers, it may not have enough scale to rely on on-demand revenues to keep it going. But for now, the company is in a relatively strong position as it begins a new phase of its existence.
