One of the greatest singers and songwriters in history, Dolly also made a remarkable impact on screens large and small for decades.
There is no doubt that Dolly Parton was the best of us. She was not simply one of the most talented writers and performers to ever pick up a guitar, but she was also a trailblazer who pushed against glass ceilings of all kinds and for decades and generations survived as a beacon of kindness and generosity.
The self-described Backwoods Barbie died on Tuesday at the age of 80, leaving behind one of the most remarkable catalogs that any artist has ever accomplished. For nearly any other storyteller, a single No. 1 hit, one ground-breaking movie role, a sole Broadway musical, or a successful production company would be enough to constitute a successful legacy, Parton, however, achieved all of that and more in her iconic 70-year career.
Celebrate the life and legacy of Dolly Parton:
Of course, her greatest and most lasting legacy will always be her music. Her songs — “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5” — long ago escaped the confines of country music and became integral parts of the new American songbook. Along the way, she was awarded 10 Grammys, the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and induction into both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame, while also having been nominated for an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
Despite all of the success music brought her, Dolly was never particularly interested in being only one thing. Her first major film role came opposite Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 1980’s “9 to 5,” followed by “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” “Steel Magnolias,” and more.
She later earned a Tony nomination for writing the music and lyrics for “9 to 5: The Musical,” and later this year, her extraordinary life will receive the full theatrical treatment in “DOLLY: A True Original Musical,” featuring the music of her incredible career and a book she co-wrote with Maria S. Schlatter.
Through Sandollar Productions, she also built an impressive career behind the camera, producing a string of popular family-focused and holiday movie musicals and, in one of the more unexpected footnotes on her extensive résumé, serving as an uncredited producer on TV’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Music will always be the core of Dolly Parton’s legacy, but her career, talents, and impact were far too expansive to be limited to just one thing. So, if you would like to celebrate the life and work of one of the greatest artists of the past century, we have compiled details on how to stream some of the most important indelible titles in her one-of-a-kind catalog.
