For those of us of a certain age, there was likely never a more defining series in our youth than “Dawson's Creek.” The cultural phenomenon that surrounded Dawson, Joey, Jen, and Pacey catapulted four young actors to instant stardom. At the center of the cast was James Van Der Beek, who played the title character. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, Van Der Beek was a constant presence on screens large and small from turns in cult-classic football movie “Varsity Blues” to an iconic cameo in the original “Scary Movie.”

While his career never grew took off quite as much as his “Dawson’s Creek” costars, he routinely turned in compelling and interesting performances in shows and movies like, “Don't Trust the B—— in Apartment 23” (in which he played himself”, as the mercurial DJ Diploin “What would Diplo Do?”, and in the first season of the Emmy-winning series “POSE.”

On Wednesday, Feb. 11, Van Der Beek passed away at the age of 48 after fighting colorectal cancer for two and a half years.
