Price concerns remain the leading reason for streaming cancelations
New data from Parks Associates shows 30% of cancelations last year were due to price concerns.
Affordability is one of the most-discussed aspects of on-demand or live video streaming, and it’s not hard to see why. Streaming hit an inflation rate of 20% in December 2025 alone, and it felt like nearly every service on the market raised its price at some point last year. New data from Parks Associates shows consumers are pushing back, as the number of viewers who canceled a streamer due to price concerns rose again in 2025.
Key Details:
- Priced out: In 2025, 30% of streaming cancellations were prompted by price concerns.
- Baseline expense: Ninety-one percent of U.S. internet households have a streaming service.
- Two-sided coin: Ad plans are good at retaining customers thanks to lower prices, but create satisfaction drags.
Per the comprehensive “Streaming Competition and Profitability: Pricing Models & Retention Strategies” from Parks, 30% of all streaming cancellations in 2025 were due to price concerns. Worries over household expenses were the most-cited reason for ditching a streaming subscription, followed by customers finishing the show they wanted to watch. Reasons related to pricing accounted for three of the top five most-given answers in Parks’ survey.
The study found that adoption of streaming services has not slacked among American internet households. Ninety-one percent of such homes have at least one streaming service, and the average household that streams from subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services has 5.8 subscriptions.
Ad-supported plans can be helpful in retaining customers, per the Parks report, but commercials are also a double-edged sword. Ads remain the biggest drag on customer satisfaction, and 70% of respondents said that they see the same ads too often while streaming content. Streamers have to walk a tightrope with the ad experience they offer customers, making sure they do not make the experience bad enough to cause customers to cancel.
“Consumers are no longer choosing between services, they’re choosing between price points,” Parks executive Michael Goodman said. “Platforms that treat affordability as a retention strategy, not a discount tactic, are far better positioned to manage churn in this mature market.”
