Which streamers can you cancel, and which should you keep this month?

Streamers to keep

Max

Max is getting ready to rename itself HBO Max this month, but that’s not the reason we think you should hold onto your subscription. The releases on the streamer throughout July are a better reason, and they start early in the month with the release of the critically-acclaimed “Sinners” on July 4.

Other marquee releases include the two-part documentary “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” on July 18, the Season 8 finale of “Rick & Morty” which will be available after its debut on Adult Swim on July 27, and a host of Shark Week programming from Discovery. HBO Max will have something for the whole family to enjoy this month, and you’re best off keeping your subscription if you’ve got it.

Paramount+

There are two titles that put Paramount+ in this segment on the list. First up is the new series “Dexter: Resurrection,” which sees Michael C. Hall return to the role he perfected as the killer of killers, Dexter Morgan. Now revived from a coma, Dexter realizes the trials he has put his son through, and sets out to make things right — even as his past catches up to him. The series debuts on the Paramount+ Premium tier on Friday, July 11.

The other is a personal favorite of mine, but since the critics agree with me, I feel I’m in the clear including it. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 3 is coming to the service on Thursday, July 17. The show centers on the continuing adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before James T. Kirk takes command of the ship.

Other titles available on the service this month include the new season of “Dora,” the Season 18 finale of “Criminal Minds,” and the Season 10 finale of “RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars.”

Peacock

Calling all “Love Island” fans: if you cancel Peacock this month, you’ll regret it. The finale of the show’s seventh season will be available to stream on Sunday, July 13, but when it ends, there’s no need to panic. You’ll also be able to stream the new series “Love Island: Beyond the Villa” on Peacock starting on the same day, with subsequent episodes dropping on Thursday evenings.

Video game fans will want to tune back into Peacock on Thursday, July 31, for the new season of “Twisted Metal.” The show follows a motormouthed driver in a post-apocalyptic landscape who has to navigate out-of-this-world villains, with the help of a few allies.

Finally, NFL fans will get a taste of football season on July 31, when the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game will be available on NBC and Peacock. It’s the first preseason game of the 2025 NFL season, and while it won’t offer much in the way of premium action, it’s the first NFL game since February.

Streamers to cancel

Netflix

There’s quite a bit coming to Netflix this month, but notably missing from the list are any of the streamer’s top original series. There are no new seasons of “Squid Game,” “Stranger Things,” or “Wednesday” coming to Netflix this month, and unless you have an abiding need to watch Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano 3 live, you can probably live without Netflix until August. You’ll have to wait a few extra days to watch “Happy Gilmore 2” — which debuts July 25 — but that shouldn’t be the end of the world.

Disney+

The final three episodes of “Ironheart” come to Disney+ on July 1, and once those come out, there aren’t many titles from Disney’s top franchises coming out on the streamer this month. No other Marvel or Star Wars titles, nor anything from Disney’s animation studios. There are several shark-related titles from National Geographic coming to Disney+ this month, but if that’s what you’re after, stick with the original and keep HBO Max for watching Shark Week, as suggested.
