Sling Freestream does offer subtitles, but very few options compared to other services.

One of the most clever moves made by Sling TV in recent years is to launch a free streaming service. The aptly-named Sling Freestream is available to all viewers, giving them a chance to sample lower-level programming on Sling and preview what it might be like to sign up for the full Sling TV experience.

Being a free streaming service, however, some audiences might be wary that Sling Freestream doesn’t have the features available on other services, such as subtitles. Sling Freestream does have subtitles available, and we’ll show you how to use them and what options are available here.

How to turn on subtitles with Sling Freestream

Turning on captions with Sling Freestrream is quite easy. What you’ll have to do first is to start the title you want to watch, though you may have to wait for the ad break at the beginning of the program to finish. Once it ends, you’ll be able to pull up the playback controls on the Sling Freestream interface.

You’ll find the subtitles button on the bottom-left corner of the screen on the Sling Freestream app for smart TVs, the bottom-right on the web, and the top-right on the Sling mobile app. The gear-shaped button will be the option you’ll want to seek out on web, while on the smart TV app it comes up as a CC button, and on the mobile app it comes up as a traditional subtitle icon.

One more important note: on the Sling TV mobile app, pressing the subtitle button will change the color of the button from grey to blue. This is the only indication you’ll have that subtitles have been activated, so make sure you look closely when trying to use subtitles on this platform.

What language options are available on Sling Freestream?

On all the titles I tested while exploring subtitle options on Sling Freestream, I found that English was the only option. Most paid streaming services offer various language choices with their subtitles, but free streamers can often have fewer choices in this regard.

Can you adjust the appearance of subtitles on Sling Freestream?

Sling Freestream is the only service that I’ve found so far that doesn’t allow viewers to adjust their subtitle appearances at least somewhat. Many services allow viewers to change the size of their subtitles, the font, the color and opacity of the caption windows, and other settings, but Sling Freestream does not offer any of these options.

These curated previews let viewers sample hit shows and original programming without signing up for another subscription, giving users a taste of premium TV at no cost.

Sports and international programming are also a major part of the experience. Freestream carries free sports-focused channels including beIN SPORTS XTRA and other niche sports feeds, while international viewers can watch programming in seven languages through channels like AajTak International, Zona TUDN, ARY News, France24, SonyKal, Noticias Univision 24/7, TVP World, Al Jazeera English, and Al Arabiya.

In addition to its free streaming catalog, Sling also offers a built-in movie rental store where users can rent newer theatrical releases and popular films without subscribing to a paid TV package. Rental pricing typically ranges from $3.99 to $24.99, depending on the title and release window, giving cord-cutters another flexible viewing option directly inside the Sling app.
